Thor's Duel With Hrungnir ( A Retelling )
" What in all the nine worlds is this nonsense !! " Thor bellowed.
" By what authority do you sit at the same honored table and drink with the Gods ? ! " Thor screamed at the Jotun.
Then to Thor's utter amazement he watched as Freyja poured ale into one of his drinking horns right in front of him !
" What madness is this ? ! How has this ugly hairy Giant bewitched the Vanir Goddess ?! " the Thunder God added in a tone of exasperation.
As Aegir and Bragi looked on they were amused by Hrungnir's sudden look of terror. Bragi for his part was making a mental note of everyting that was taking place and being said. He knew this would make a wonderful tale for future telling once he embellished it with a little of his imagination.
Hrungnir nervously took a sip from the horn, then turned around to face the God of Thunder. His hand began to tremble when he caught sight of Thor's angry eyes, which glowed as red, and as hot as the lava that flowed out of the volcanoes in Muspelheim.
" I.... I.... I am here under the safe conduct given to me by Odin,.... your father,.... who invited me to come into his great hall and have a drink with the Gods." Hrungnir told Thor with a noticeable stutter.
Thor intentionally knocked the horn over, spilling the contents onto the table.
" Guests in my father's hall do not usually make threats against the Aesir and the Vanir ! I promise that you will regret taking advantage of my father's kindness before you leave ! " Thor told the Jotun in a threatening tone.
Hrungnir looked over at the horn and watched as the ale dripped off of the table onto the floor. In his mind he saw his blood dripping off of the same table if he could not find a way out of his predicament. Then the Jotun smiled as a plan came to him.
" Does Thor think that he can gain honor by killing an unarmed Jotun here in his father's hall ? " he asked.
Thor did not reply. He simply hovered menacingly over the Jotun with his hammer held high.
When Hrungnir could no longer bear the awful silence he shouted :
" No ! It will not enhance your reputation one bit if you kill me while I am weaponless. However, it would be a much greater honor, and a magnificent test of your courage and strength, if you dared to fight me in Jotunheim,... say at Grjotunagardar,... in a duel ! " he told Thor with a nervous grin.
Hrungnir shook his head, and took a long deep breath.
" I was a dumb fool to have left my home without my shield and hone. If I had my weapons with me, we could fight our duel right now. " he added.
The Jotun continued to speak, and did not allow the Thunder God a chance to respond.
" If you are intending to kill me unarmed as I am, I, along with others, will call you a coward . " he explained to Thor.
Thor slowly lowered his hammer. As he did his eyes returned to their normal green color. The God of Thunder was intrigued by the Jotun's words. He had never been challenged to a duel before !
" I agree to this single combat ! " he told Hrungnir.
" When shall we meet ? " Thor asked.
Hrungnir's shoulders slumped, and he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
" I will meet you in one phase of Midgard's moon, in Jotunheim, at the place known as Grjotunagardar. It is there that we will see who is the stronger ! " Hrungnir replied boldly.
" Then you have one phase of the Earth's moon to prepare yourself to die ! " he told the Jotun with a laugh.
