General Motors : Another Dishonorable Company
When I first heard of this recall I did not think much of it. You hear about cars being recalled all the time for one thing or another. It was not until I heard that the CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra, had been called before a congressional committee to give sworn testimony, that I began to have my interest peaked !
Thanks to modern television I was able to watch Mary Barra testify on C- Span before the government committee. Or what I should say is I watched Mary Barra dodge most of the questions that the congressmen, and women asked her. Her standard answer to most of the questions was that she was not in charge of GM at the time, and did not know the answers at the present . She then went on to say that GM was doing an internal investigation to discover who it was that was responsible for allowing these unsafe cars onto our roads. The things she did admit to was that GM knew before the first car hit the road that the ignition switch was substandard, and did not meet their own quality specifications. The torque number that the switch was supposed to handle was 20, but the switches that were delivered to GM were below 10. Someone at GM authorized their use anyway. The scary thing that I took out of her testimony was when she admitted that even after GM recognized that their was a problem with these failing switches, the new altered switches that they ordered still did not meet their specifications, and therefore still kept failing, and shutting off the Cobalt's electrical systems endangering lives !
For 10 years, ( Yes, 10 long years ) GM refused to recall the Cobalt, and several other cars, because,.... well we all know the power of money. So drivers kept getting injured, and some were even killed. It was only when the public outcry ( Bad Publicity ) began to erode their perceived good name that they decided to issue a recall. The new GM CEO Mary Barra was quick to tell the congressmen, and women, how she immediately addressed the issue, and how GM is now taking good care to insure the safety of their customers. Yes, they are " Addressing " the situation but many people have had to wait for the parts to come in while still driving a dangerous car . I was told for instance " You'll be fine ! Just make sure there are no other keys on your key ring when you are driving ! "
Now some of you are probably wondering what this has to do with the Asatru religion. Well, in a way it has a lot to do with the different way Pagans and Monotheists think. Monotheists, especially Christians, have this forgive and forget mentality. " Oh, you screwed me over ?! Well, I forgive you ! " It is because of this Christian mentality that these large corporations think they can get away with almost anything. And they do again, and again, and again !
The sad thing is that we the consumers are to blame ! When the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska, and spilled oil all over their pristine coast, all I heard was : " Boycott Exxon, don' t buy their products ! " When BP's oil rig exploded pouring oil into the Gulf Of Mexico for days on end everyone was up in arms. " Don' t buy BP products ! " was heard throughout America.
Unfortunately, however, these were just words from 99.9 % of the consuming public. When I drive by BP and Exxon gas stations today, here in America, they are just as busy as all the other gas stations in the area. And we all know that Exxon is constantly posting huge profits these days ! I will not even go into how badly the banks screwed over the world's economy. They are finally paying fines, which to us seem huge. To them, however, these fines will barely knock their profits off stride. And General Motors, as well, will soon be listed among these companies that screwed over the public, paid a fine, and then went on making money off of the defenseless public. My question is who will be next ? Will an airliner have a defect and fall from the sky ? Will the refrigerator you own burst into flames and burn down your house ? Or maybe the bike your child is riding will malfunction injuring your child because of the negligence of some executive who placed profit above the safety of the consumer !
Yes ! We are the enablers ! Our conviction only seems to last as long as the fad is popular, and then we forgive these mega companies no matter how much they pollute, or how many lives are lost because of their negligence ! The time has come my friends to stop enabling these companies to go on as though nothing has happened. And the only way to do this is to hurt them where it hurts most. And that of course is on their bottom line ! I personally have not purchased any products from either BP or Exxon for years, and I will never own another GM product as long as I live. ( And I will probably buy 3 or 4 more vehicles in my lifetime ).
Unfortunately we cannot banish or outlaw companies the way our ancestors outlawed one of their folk who had committed a horrendous crime. But we can, and should, make these companies pay for what they have done by no longer using their products. And if we do this, then and only then, will these companies take proactive steps to ensure the safety of the public and our environment !
