Here they spoke of Olav Digre's journey and: " About the trouble he made, both by slaying men,and by maiming them." At the meeting King Gudrod spoke out against King Olav saying : " It seems strange to me that ye waver in settling this matter"; also that : " Ye are thoroughly afraid of Olav ! We are here five kings and none of us is of lower birth than he." Because of Gudrod's strong words it was decided to: " Fall upon him ( King Olav ) at a place arranged. "
Ketel, of Ringanes, who was also at this meeting, betrayed the five kings. He took 40 men, found King Olav, and told him of their plan. King Olav went back with Ketel, who knew exactly which houses the five kings slept, and waited for morning. Heimskringla then tells us that: " The kings had no might of men to protect them and they were all taken prisoner, and brought before the Christian King Olav."
As punishment King Rorik was blinded in both eyes, and Olav took him with him under close guard. Later after several more feeble attempts on Olav's life he was finally put to death. King Olav made his men cut out the tongue of Gudrod, the Dale King, and the other kings were made to swear oaths of allegiance to King Olav and then were banished from Olav's now consolidated Norwegian kingdom.
We honor you great Gudrod this day for what you tried to do for our Old Gods and our ancestors. Though your plan never came to fruition it was a brave thing to speak out against the tyrant King Olav. I raise my horn in your honor in grateful thanks for your efforts on their behalf. I will yell twice as loud when I say, " Hail King Gudrod, our great martyr of the old ways", to make up for your lack of a tongue !
Respected are those who fought for our religion and our ways.
Blessed are those who fell for their love of our Gods.
Rewarded are those who resisted the neverending tide of Christianity.
Loved are the children taken away before their time.
Missed are the generations never born.
Praised are those who kept our traditions alive.
Honored forever, every man, woman and child, who refused to be baptized.
Glorified, they now, and through enternity, reside with the Gods !
