Eyvind Kinnrifi was killed for no other reason than his loyalty and love for the Old Gods and Goddesses. Olaf tortured him to death by putting a brazier filled with red-hot coals on his stomach until his body literally burst open. Hopefully, for his sake, killing him instantly. The pain must have been absolutely unbearable!
Olver,(Olver), the Martyr, was killed for continuing, in secret, to sacrifice to the Old Godsand Goddesses despite decrees by St. Olaf forbidding them. He was betrayed and killed by Olaf Digre's men while getting ready for the Spring sacrifice in Maerin, Norway.
Gudrod, (Guthroth), was aminor king who had the courage to speak out against the policies opposing Pagan rituals and sacrifice. Olaf Tryggvason captured him and had his tongue cut out. There appear to be no records of what happened to him after this incident, but I am sure that he was harrassed and possibly put to death for his actions.
Christians always talk about love, compassion and forgiveness, but from the Dark Ages through the Middle Ages these virtues seem to have been put away as they slaughtered thousands of Pagan faithful. These three men could have simply converted and been baptized and saved themselves. They chose not to turn their backs on the Old Gods and Goddesses and paid the highest of prices for their defiance!
As they did not turn away from their faith we should never turn our backs on them by forgetting them. We must, at least once a year, honor these brave men for what they did for our religion and ultimately for us. Hail to these three brave martyrs !
The accepted dates for honoring them is as follows:
Eyvind Kinnrifi - February 9th
Olver the Martyr - March 9th
King Gudrod - May 9th
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
