When the winds became favorable King Olaf sailed after him to the Godey Islands and, under the cover of darkness, seized Raud, while he was sleeping. Olaf said he could keep his lands and ship if he converted to Christianity and was baptized. Raud the Strong refused and made fun of the Christian God. Infuriated King Olaf had him bound to a wooden beam, placed a wooden rod in his mouth to keep it open, and tried to force a snake down his throat through a horn! The first time it would not go in but the second time he used a red hot iron to force it to crawl through. It crawled down his throat and ate its way out of his side killing him.
All of Raud's men were given the same choice, convert to Christianity or be tortured and killed. They chose death. All of Raud's possessions were seized including his serpent ship.
May the Gods and Goddesses seat Raud the Strong, and his men, everday until Ragnarok, in the halls of Valhalla! For through his brave defiance he has surely earned his place there. Honor Raud the Strong on January the 9th. Hail Raud the Strong !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
