Radbod was, however, defeated in 689 by Pippin in the Battle of Dorestad and lost West Frisia to the Merovingian Kingdom. When Pippin died in 714, Radbod gathered his army again and went on the offensive. He made it as far as Cologne, where he defeated the before mentioned Charles Martel in 716.
In the long run Charles Martel and his armies prevailed and the Frisians had to give up the fight. At the end of his life he tried to assemble another army, which terrified all of France, but was unsuccessful. Even after Radbod died his successors tried to fight on against the Christian Frankish invaders, but to no avail.
Radbod fought long and hard for his people, his land, and his Pagan religion. For this he deserves our respect and our unending pledge to honor him. He too is seated in the halls of Valhalla next to our other great Pagan heroes and rightfully so!
Honor Radbod on August 9th. Hail great Radbod, King of the Frisians and protector of the old ways!
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
