Starting two years ago, I began to build quite a collection of statuary of our Deities. This all started when I went to Iceland and saw the actual statues that the Icelandic people used on their altars over a thousand years ago in their temples, and in their homes. I bought a few replicas there, ( eight to be exact), and then went on a search here in America for more. I found them in places like Sacred Source, Museum Replica's, and of course my best friend, Amazon. Com. I now have 45 images of our deities, and about 50 or 60 Viking age replicas of swords, shields, helmets, ships, etc... My house now looks more like the museum I visited in Iceland than a home.
My friend says that I have gone, "Icon Crazy", but I feel very comfortable with these images throughout my house. After dealing with another day of life in our Christian world, it is very soothing, and reassuring to my soul to walk through my front door and see above the fireplace, Odin, with two Valkyries on each side of him, two ravens by his ears, and two wolves howling at the base of the fireplace. The feeling I get is akin to being wrapped in warm blankets on a cold night. I feel safe here in my little sanctuary, a Pagan in a Christian world. Here I don't have to defend my beliefs; here I don't have to answer stupid questions about my faith; here I am not looked down upon by those who do not believe as I do.
I have never been one to be addicted to anything. I don't smoke, barely drink, and I am not a shopaholic, but when I find a new statue or image of one of our great Gods and Goddesses, I feel a pull upon my heart and soul to obtain it. I am especially happy when I find a statue of a God or Goddess I did not previously have. I recently found a little statue of Frigga which made me very happy. With it I set up my ninth altar in my house.
If wanting to show my love for our Gods and Goddesses this way is wrong, then I don't want to be right ! I love the feeling of comfort, security and uniqueness that these Icons bring to my home and to my life. I know the Gods and Goddesses are with me with, or without these images of Them, but their imagery brings me closer to them, especially during rituals. They are a focal point with which to direct my attention and my thoughts upon, and help me to reach a higher oneness with them.
So if my home looks like the inside of a museum, or a Hof, then that is the way it is supposed to be. This is not just my home but my Temple to Them. The next time a friend says I have gone, "Icon crazy", I will just smile at them, and say thanks !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
