I myself am not a tech enthusiast . I do not own a blue ray dvd player, or have a lap top, or a kindle, and I have not played video games since pac - man was an arcade game . It is not that these things do not interest me, it is just that I am more interested in the simple pleasures of life that the Gods and Goddesses have given to us. I like to read, travel, hike, camp, kayak, and bike. Most of all I love to go to places where I can truly see, and appreciate, the great things that the Gods have given to us. Nature, and the natural world are of course a big part of what I really love. There, and in some respects only there, can you truly see life as it was meant to be, untarnished and corrupted by mankind.
Everyday I pass by Farrington Lake on my way to work. At forty - five miles per hour it is not much more than a blur that cannot be appreciated as it should be. On the weekends, however, I pull out my touring bike, and pedal down to this beautiful waterway to really take in the beauty and wonders that it has to offer. When I traveled there two weeks ago there were a variety of flowers that were in bloom along its banks, and the entire area was alive with wildlife. Pedaling around at 10 miles an hour gives me the opportunity to see everything up close and personal. At forty -five miles and hour I would have missed the beautiful white swans, ( They always remind me of the stories of the Valkyries ), some heron's, a muskrat, and a variety of ducks and geese. The Gods put these wonderful things here for us to be entertained and to fill us with wonder, and it is a shame if we did not take the time to stop and enjoy them.
It is hard to notice, however, what the Gods have created for us when our heads are glued to a cell phone, or when we are texting like we are writing a novel. The other day when I was in Tri - centennary Park I watched a young couple who were sitting on a park bench. They were both text messaging, or playing games, I was too far away to notice which, and were totally oblivious to the beauty of their surroundings. They sat there for about 15 minutes, then got up and left. As they walked away they were still playing with their phones ! Not only were they not interacting with each other, a shame because they were a cute young couple, but they did not even take notice of their beautiful surroundings. What a missed opportunity ! The skies were azure blue, with white puffy clouds, flowers were in bloom, and squirrels, chipmunks, and birds of all types were scurrying around. It was a great show to watch, and it was free !
In a world that seems to spin, at least in our minds, faster and faster, we need to slow down, and enjoy the things that mattered most to our ancestors. We have lost touch with the natural world because we have developed our own little technological world to replace it. Our lives, life itself, is an incredible experience and should not be missed out on. If you can't stop completely to, " smell the roses" , at least try to slow down to 10 miles per hour and take in what the Gods and Goddesses have done for us !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection !
