Being an old single male and having no one to preside over a female oriented ritual I have had to change it a little to represent the birth and return of light . Besides, if I missed an opportunity to honor the female Goddesses Freyja would never forgive me. When I think of the ultimate mother Goddess, I, of course, think of Mother Frigga sitting there spinning her threads, probably waiting for Odin to come home from one of his many trips. Her motherly love touches us all very deeply. I honor her first in the rite because it is her motherly love which lights up our hearts just as the coming season will brighten our evening skies. I honor her for her warmth and generosity, which I equate with the slow warming of the world which will come with the next turn of the year wheel. I make many toasts in her honor but make sure not to over do it.
Holda is a lot more difficult for me because I do not have a history with her. I honor her for her help and guidance in the birth of our children and I ask her, as the Goddess of Winter, to make this season a short and mild one. Along with Holda I honor the Idises who watch over our households and help with childbirth and the development of our children. Our children are our most precious things. They are our future and our link to the past. The Idises play a pivotal role in their growing up and must be honored for their efforts.
I also honor all my past female ancestors who allowed my family to continue and prosper. Women never get enough credit for the job they do in raising our children and keeping the houshold. And nowadays they often times have to work as well ! Freyja wants them honored for all they do for us. Finally, I end the Rite honoring my mother who was a great woman and suffered so much in life. May the Gods and Goddesses watch over her resting soul !
The Mother - Night ritual should be held the night before the Winter Solstice, according to most sources, but if you are off by a day or two I don't think it would matter too much. What does matter is that we honor our female Goddesses, our Idises and of course our female ancestors. It is also a night when you should appreciate the home or dwelling that you live in. Be it big or small to have a roof over your head is a blessing in itself, especially in these hard times when so many have lost their homes.
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
