The Evolution Of A Concept
It was a beautiful moonlit night . Evil Sunna had left the Dwarves world, and their friend Mani now ruled the skies over Brising. After working all day underground in their workshop, Grer, and his brothers Dvalinn, Berling and Alfrik, had come to the beach to relax in the sand, and go for a refreshing swim. Everyone seemed to be having fun, or so Grer thought, until he saw Dvalinn, the eldest, on his knees drawing a sketch in the wet sand just out of reach of the surf.
Grer walked up behind his brother and placed his hand on Dvalinn's shoulder.
" What are you doing brother ? " Grer asked in a deep raspy voice.
Dvalinn did not look up at his brother, but instead continued to scratch at the wet sand with the edge of a clam shell.
" I am making a sketch of a wonderful new necklace that I want us to make out of the purest of gold ! " he told Grer.
Grer shook his head from side to side with disgust, and then bent down on one knee.
" Can you never relax Dvalinn ? " he asked in an annoyed tone.
Dvalinn did not answer.
Alfrik and Berling had been swimming in the surf when they spotted their brothers hovering over something on the beach. Berling motioned to his brother to follow him, and they soon crept up behind their older brothers. Berling nodded to Alfrik and they both shook their wet hairy bodies over their brothers.
" What in the nine worlds ! " Grer exclaimed angrily.
Dvalinn was much older and calmer than Grer. With a big smile on his face he reached his hand up toward the sky.
" Has it begun to rain ? " the eldest brother asked with a laugh.
All the brothers broke out into laughter except Grer who gave his siblings an evil look.
" Must you act like children ? " Grer asked. You are almost a hundred years old now, and yet you still act as though your are in your twenties ! " Grer shouted at Alfrik and Berling.
Alfrik, the youngest, shrank before his older brother, but Berling, who saw humor in almost everything, shook his head back and forth, showering his angry brother with sea water from his long wet hair. Then, realizing what would come next, Berling turned and began to run away.
" Why you little bastard ! " Grer screamed.
" Catch me if you can ! " Berling laughed as he kept himself just out of Grer' s reach.
" You had better hope that I do not catch you ! For If I do I will pound you harder than a sword against my anvil ! " he screamed at Berling who was taunting him.
Dvalinn watched his brothers running around putting on a show, but Alfrik knelt down in the wet sand, and with his finger began to draw circles below the outline in the sand. He then connected these larger circles with smaller circles to the necklace drawing. When Dvalinn turned around and saw what his brother had drawn he nodded.
" Yes, Alfrik ! Precious gems in gold settings would be very nice indeed ! " Dvalinn told his little brother.
Grer had no patience for games and quickly came back to see what his brothers were doing. The stoic Dwarve stroked his chin for a moment before he added :
" I have been setting precious stones in gold for years now, and I have to tell you Alfrik that you have no imagination ! " he said as he pointed to the additions to the drawing.
Dvalinn looked up at Grer.
" What do you mean brother ? Do you not think that gemstones set in the finest gold would enhance both the beauty, and the value of the piece ? " he asked.
Grer gave his older brother a rude smirk.
" Of course it would enhance the necklace ! But four or five circular settings is NOT original ! Nor is it very attractive ! Make one setting round, one square, one oval, one rectangular, and one pear shaped, and then you will have a magnificent and very unique piece of jewelry ! " he explained to Dvalinn in a commanding tone.
The brothers were not aware that Berling had returned, but when they heard him speak they all turned quickly around.
" Yes ! I can make the settings in any shape that you want ! " he told his brothers in a serious tone.
Grer narrowed his eyes, and gave Berling a dirty look, before asking Alfrik a question.
" And what gems would you use little brother ? " he asked.
Alfrik smiled. He was the youngest and least experienced of the brothers, but no one in Brising could choose, cut, and polish gemstones as well as he was able to do.
" I would think a large diamond should hang in the middle of the piece surrounded by ruby, turquoise, emerald, sapphire and opal gemstones. " he told his brothers as he imagined their shapes and sizes in his head.
Pleased, Grer nodded at his brother.
" That sounds absolutely wonderful ! " he told Alfrik with a huge smile.
Dvalinn took one last look at his drawing, and then got up and began to walk away. Grer gave his remaining brothers a confused look.
" Dvalinn ! Where are you going ? " Grer shouted after his brother.
Dvalinn did not bother to turn as he neared the cave entrance.
" Why, back to our workshop of course ! The gold will have to be melted and filtered many times to make it pure enough to be used in our.... Brisingamen Necklace ! " he shouted back at his brother.
Grer pounded his fist into his other hand.
" We are supposed to be relaxing brother ! When do you want to begin this new project ? " he shouted already knowing the answer.
Dvalinn stopped and glanced over his shoulder at Grer.
" I have already started ! You will have to hurry if you plan to catch up ! " he told his brother with a huge grin.
Grer shook his head in disgust, and looked up at Mani as if the great shining disc could somehow change his brothers mind. As he did Berling noticed that Alfrik was still kneeling on the ground behind Grer. With a burst of laughter Berling gently pushed his preoccupied brother over the back of Alfrik, and then ran away laughing.
Grer hit the sand with a dull thud ! When the shock of the moment faded he punched his fist in the air and screamed in the general direction of his fleeing brother.
" You son of a maggot !!! When I get my hands on you I will tear you apart, and you will gladly run out into Sunna's glare for relief from my wrath ! " Grer screamed at Berling.
