The other problem we have in our religion is that everyone wants to organize. They get a few people to follow them and suddenly they are recruiting people to join their organization like Christians do when they send out postcards trying to get people to their failing churches. And of course people jump right on the bandwagon, and think it is a great idea. "Yes I will be more than willing to join an organization, and give up some of my freedoms to be part of something bigger. " Then after a while they realize that this religious organization has gotten too big and that they as individuals no longer matter. What suffers through all of this is their relationship with the Gods and Goddesses. They worry too much about the structure and rules of this new religious order and do not spend as much time with the Gods themselves. Being together as a community is one thing, but when you start to make rules and regulations, and elect leaders etc. you are just asking for problems. And I see it happen over and over again !
One of the other problems that does seem to be easing a bit is the issue of Loki and the Jotuns. More and more people in our religion seem to be opening up to the idea of allowing those who honor Jotuns into their fold, though some have restrictions such as using a different altar or seperate area for their rituals. Loki is a bit trickier, no pun intended, but I do see some restrictions being lifted against his worship as well.
The other problem that I still see in our religion, and one that is not likely to change anytime soon is the racism and prejudice in our religion. Some organizations try to hide it from the image that is portrayed to the public, but it is hard to hide such a thing for long. I actually have more respect for the organizations that are upfront about it, though I of course totally disagree with their racist views. I will always live by then creed " There is no honor in dishonoring others". We do not need to put down others to engage with our Gods and Goddesses, and therefore in my opinion racism has no place in our religious structure.
I keep hoping that we as a people can come together without anger, without false pride, and without hidden motives or agendas, and maybe someday that will happen, but I do not think that 2013 will be that year. I am not even sure that we can build what I like to call an Asatru Nation in my lifetime. We are still too few, too far apart, and our ideas have not yet melted into an agreed upon format for success. All we can do is keep trying and push on to reach the goals that we seek. I just hope that sometime soon we can agree on what those goals even are.
