Those in Pagan religions should not take oaths, pledges, or boasts lightly ! The Gods and Goddesses expect us to adhere to the oaths and pledges that we make to them. Once and oath is made Var will hold it until it is accomplished. If you give the pledge your best effort the Gods and Goddesses may forgive you for falling short, but if you give up without truly trying to accomplish the goal there will be consequences to be paid ! I believe that every broken oath or pledge leaves a scar upon ones soul that the Gods and Goddesses will clearly see when judging us at life's end.
When making a pledge or oath to the Gods and Goddesses first make sure that it is something that is attainable. Instead of saying that you will quit smoking next year, which may be beyond your will power, pledge to cut down the amount of ciggarettes you will smoke. This is applicable for consumption of alcohol and weight loss as well. The Gods and Goddesses will be pleased if you make a modest oath and then meet or exceed it. They will be rather angry if you set your sights too high and fall well short of your goal however.
In conclusion I say to all Pagans, take your oaths, pledges and boasts very seriously. The Gods and Goddesses are listening and will hold you to your word. In our religions our word is our bond to the Gods and Goddesses and it should not be broken !
