New Story :
' The Spring Troll ' © 2017.
My new short story, ' The Spring Troll ' takes place in Nidaros, Norway, circa. 1155 A.C.E., just after the Catholics had consolidated their control over religion in that country. To speak of the old Gods, at this time, in a manner which placed them on higher, or equal footing, with the Christian God, or his son, Jesus Christ, was considered to be the highest form of blasphemy. Some children, who grew up in this time period, were not told of the old Gods at all, or if they were, they were told that it was an evil time in their history, and that these Gods had no standing in a new united Norway.
This story tells the tale of one little girl, Alffina, who has never heard of the old Gods, and like many little children her age does not care much about religion, or the new God and his White Christ son. She innocently wants only to play out in the sunshine, and collect flowers in the warming spring sun.
One day, however, her ignorance of the old Gods is swept away by a new friend she meets by the river, who tells her all about the Gods of the Viking Age. Intrigued by such wonderful tales she tells her mother and father what she has heard, and it is then that her troubles begin ! First she is condemned by the local priest Lefvini, and later she is taken away from her parents by the Archbishop of Nidaros, Jon Birgisson, ( A real person I have plucked from history to add a little realism to a fictional tale ),who brands her as a witch .
Will Alffina ever escape the clutches of the Catholic clergy ? Will she be able to make anyone believe the fantastic story about the being who told her such tales, or will she be considered crazy even by those close to her ? Will she live long enough to hand down to others the incredible stories that her new friend Sirik had told her ? Find out beginning next week here on this website !
