Njord : A Jealous God
With Anger and Malice
" The road to where you want to be is always a long one ! " Njord whispered the old Vanir saying to himself. The Sea God realized that this was only a perception, but he was very anxious to get back to Thrymheim to confront Ullr, and stop him from molesting his wife further. As each of his footsteps brought him ever closer to Skadhi' s mountain abode, he could sense the unsettling rise in elevation, and could feel the temperature dropping. As a cold shiver went up his spine Njord shook his head, and said to himself : " Just another reason to hate these damn mountains ! " Then he heard the distant sound of wolves howling, which seemed to echo, and rise in volume just before it hit his hears. " And there is the main reason I loathe these mountains ! Wolves ! Ugly damn creatures ! " he said angrily to no one .
After she had buried the last of her animal friends, Skadhi cleaned herself up, and packed some food for her journey to Noatun. As always she made sure that her bow was strung, and firm, and that her quiver was well stocked with arrows. Skadhi told the Jotun Bjorgolf, who was now staying with her, that she was going to be away for a while, and then she gathered up her traveling companions, Little Growler, and Swift Runner, before heading down through the mountains towards Noatun. Unlike her husband, Skadhi did not like to walk on roads, or even paths for that matter, but preferred instead to navigate her way in the forest, over rocks, and through the thick brush along the forest floor to reach her destinations. It was here in her element that she felt most comfortable. And few if any could find their way through the mountains better that the Ski Goddess.
Njord and Skadhi passed within a stones throw of each other as they walked in opposite directions. Neither was aware of the others presence because they were walking on opposite sides of the same ridge. Much like Thrymheim and Noatun had come between the two of them, this ridge also now separated them, and kept them apart. It was not only their steps that were going in different directions, but also their reasons for their journeys. Skadhi was seeking reconciliation. Njord was seeking revenge !
When Njord saw the great hall at Thrymheim off in the distance, he drew his sword, and walked off of the road, and into the cover of the forest. As he approached the front door of the great hall he did not see anyone there, and so he decided to silently walk around the hall looking for Skadhi and Ullr. As he came around the final corner of the hall, suddenly a figure walked right out in front of him ! Njord jumped back, and readied himself for battle !
" Njord ? Are you still her ?" Bjorgolf asked. " I thought everyone had left ." the Jotun added. Njord breathed a sigh of relief ! He had forgotten that Odin had asked Skadhi to let her kinsman stay at Thrymheim. " I am looking for Ullr ! " Njord told him. " Where is he ?! " he demanded loudly. Bjorgolf was surprised by Njord' s tone, and gave him a puzzled look. " The Archer God left yesterday. " the Jotun replied calmly. " And my wife ? ! " Njord asked. " She left this morning as well my friend. " Bjorgolf replied. " Would you like to stay and have a drink Njord ? " the Jotun asked with a big smile. " Thank you, but no . I have business elsewhere. " Njord told him as he placed his sword back in its scabbard. The Vanir God then turned away from the Jotun, and headed for Ydalir. " Maybe next time my friend ?! " Bjorgolf yelled after him. Njord did not turn back or respond. He was now focused on just one thing. Njord wanted to kill Ullr !
