Odin' s Legion
Months before there were, however, other eyes that looked down upon this realm known as Midgard. On a cold world, in a palace formed from stalactites and stalagmites made of pure ice, sat a large blue - gray figure. From his frozen throne high atop Jotunberg, Spellverki, the leader of the ancient beings known as the Frost Giants, peered down, and watched with great interest the events transpiring on that warm blue world that he and his people despised so much.
This round sphere known as Midgard had been formed from the remains of their first ancestor, the proto - being named Ymir. Then this world was given to those weak little beings known as humans ! The Frost Giants would have wiped these insects out and taken Midgard if not for Thor and his fellow Asgardians. And it was Odin, the one everyone called the All- Father, who led this evil Aesir race. He was the one responsible for killing Ymir ! He was the one who bore the child who defeated them in what was now known as the Frost Giant War !! And it was Odin who Spellvirki was going to make pay for his meddling ways !!!
For years Spellvirki had watched as Odin's love and admiration grew for the insect king of Varmland called Sigtrygg. Odin had developed an obsession with this human, and the All- Father often broke his own decree to help the Midgardian. The leader of the Frost Giants watched as Odin time and time again protected the human in battle after battle. It made Spellvirki sick to see a God treat an insignificant creature such as this human with such reverence. For the Jotuns, and the Aesir, were much higher born races. And although Odin might refuse to admit it, he too was descended from Jotun stock.
Spellvirki had for many seasons planned to get back at Odin through this human king named Sigtrygg. " If I can' t kill Odin himself, then I will kill the things that he loves best ! " he told himself and his friends in Jotunheim. The problem that Spellvirki had to work out, however, was just how he was going to make this a reality !
The leader of the Frost Giants knew all too well that he could not simply walk into Midgard and slay this insignificant little rodent king. First it would be difficult for them to get through the fortifications that the Aesir had erected around Midgard. If they could somehow breach the great wall, either Odin, who seemed to see everything that the Frost Giants did, or Jord would notify Thor at once and no one was feared more than the Thunder God by the Jotuns ! No ! There had to be a better way ! What Spellvirki needed was someone inside Midgard to gather information for him. What the Jotun leader wanted was a human spy ! It was, however, almost impossible to get into Midgard without being seen by the Aesir.
Then one day Spellvirki sat stroking his frozen beard when suddenly a wind blew up. As the Jotun Lord watched, a snow shower descended upon his ice palace. When the collected flakes had reached a certain depth they rose up into a beautiful white Jotun maiden. As she slowly walked over to the king of Jotunheim she smiled. " My father Snaer sends his greetings great one ! " she told the Giant. Spellvirki nodded his head to acknowledge her father's kindness. " I thought Snaer only had a son named Thorri. I did not know that he had such a lovely daughter such as yourself ! " The Jotun king told her with a toothy smile. " What is your name child ? " he asked. The white maiden gleamed in the dark hall from the complement. " My name is Drifa ! " she replied boldly. " And my father has two other daughters as well ! They are my sisters Fonn and Mjoll. " she added.
Spellvirki suddenly had a revelation ! As quickly as a cold north wind can suddenly blow, The Jotun leader formulated a plan in his devious mind. Spellvirki looked up at the Jotun maiden with an evil grin. " How would you like to help me get a measure of revenge against Odin and his Aesir people ? " the Jotun asked. Drifa gave the blue Giant a huge smile. " What did you have in mind ? " she asked in return.
The next day it began to snow in the Midgardian village of Saurby which was located in Varmland near the border with Romerike. As a large warrior passed through the snow a young maiden formed from a deep snow drift. She was pale, beautiful, and she was quite naked ! The village chieftain, named Lambi, was both shocked and pleased to see such a beautiful maiden. The chieftain covered her with his coat and brought her back to his longhouse. And it was there over the course of many nights that she gave the human so much pleasure that he agreed to do anything for her. The task that she gave to him was to spy on the Varmland king, and to report his findings back to her. From that day forward it snowed in Saurby once a week, and once a week Spellvirki received the information that he so desperately wanted.
Now as Spellvirki looked down upon Midgard he saw Lambi as he walked into King Sigtrygg's hall. As the respected chieftain of Saurby, and an honored guest at the wedding, this human was in the perfect position to spy on the human king. And not even Odin, the great all- seeing, all- knowing, God to mankind, and the leader of the Aesir race suspected anything ! Spellvirki's evil laughter rang out through the halls as he watched intently the events taking place in Midgard !
