Odin' s Legion
Spellvirki' s Plan
Reality settled back in as he reached the outskirts of his village. Lambi did not stop in the village, but instead rode to the forest at the foot of the great mountain that rose up high above Saurby. At the edge of the forest Lambi dismounted and yelled into the darkness . " Drifa ! Drifa ! " His beautiful maiden had told him that if he came to this spot and called her name she would appear to him. " Drifa ! Drifa ! " he called out a second time as he scanned the forest. Suddenly a cold wind blew up, and snow began to fall at the edge of the forest. As the snow settled on the ground it began to take shape, and in a few short moments a maiden stood along the tree line whose skin was as white and pure as the newly fallen snow itself.
" Drifa ! " Lambi called out softly. The maiden turned to face him. " Yes, my love. I am here ! " Drifa replied with a pleasant smile. Lambi ran over, threw his arms around her and held her tightly. " I have missed you so much ! " he whispered in her ear. Drifa' s cold blue eyes looked through the human into the darkness. " I have missed you too my love. " she told him in a monotone voice. Drifa then pushed Lambi away to arms length, and looked deep into his eyes. " Do you have something to tell me ? Is that why you have come ? " she asked. Lambi leaned forward, kissed her on the lips, and gave her a little grin. " I have my love ! I have ! " her told her excitedly.
Lambi told Drifa about the wedding , the feast, and how Prince Viglund and Princess Aldisar were leaving in the morning for the land of the Swedes. Then he informed her that the kings and queens of Romerike and Varmland would not be going with them. Drifa listened intently as she transcribed every word into her memory. Then using the snow that had fallen to make a map of the route between Varmland and Sweden, he showed how the travelers would have to go through several deep valleys with high mountains bracketing both sides. " I think that there are several places where Frost Giants could hide and attack those guarding the prince and princess. Once their escorts are eliminated it would be easy to capture them. " he told Drifa. " That is what you are planning ? To capture the prince and princess and hold them for ransom ? " he asked. Drifa smiled. " Yes, of course. " she replied with little or no conviction in her voice. Drifa kissed Lambi on the cheek. " Thank you ! I must leave you and give this information to Spellvirki at once, but I will come back soon ! " she told him. Drifa then walked back toward the forest. As Lambi watched she seemed to disappear in the blowing snow.
Spellvirki was walking his wolves when a sudden wind blew snow all around him. As the snow slowly settled it formed the shape of a Jotun maiden. The lord of the Frost Giants smiled broadly as he spoke : " I presume you have come to give me good news ? " he asked. Drifa bent down and petted one of the wolf - beasts. " Yes ! The human has been most helpful indeed ! " she told him. Spellvirki reached down, and grabbed her by the arm, pulling her upright again. " Well !? Do not keep me waiting snow maiden ! " he demanded as he stared deep into her eyes.
Drifa was accustomed to the extreme temperatures of Jotunheim, but when Spellvirki looked at her with his black eyes it made her shiver inside. After the Frost Giant War he had risen to the top by killing any and every Jotun who dared to stand in his way. She was certain that the Jotun king would have no misgivings about killing her right now. The snow maiden quickly told Spellvirki everything that the human had told her. She also showed the Jotun king the route that the royal couple would take on their way to Sweden.
Spellvirki listened carefully to every word that Drifa told him. When she finished the king dismissed her abruptly, and went back to his ice palace. As the Jotun king sat upon his blue ice throne he stroked his frozen beard. Inside his mind he was slowly and carefully formulating a multifaceted and complex plan to destroy King Sigtrygg, and gain revenge against Odin and his Aesir brood. When he had all the details worked out in his mind he called out to his palace guards : " Bring me Skjalfti at once ! " he ordered.
Skjalfti did not like being ordered to do anything. He was huge even by Jotun standards, and had been given his name because when he walked he caused the ground to shake. After the Frost Giant War Skjalfti had left Jotunberg and built himself an ice hut on top of a tall mountain to the west. He was disgusted with the way his people had handled the war, and he did not like being in the company of those from his own race. As he walked up the path that lead to the king' s ice palace, his eyes narrowed as his anger grew !
Spellvirki could feel the palace floor shake with what he knew were the footsteps of a massive Jotun. " Open the doors ! " the Jotun king shouted to his palace guards. When they opened the huge ice doors the Jotun warriors were greeted by the sight of a large Jotun who did not look very happy. " Come in Skjalfti ! " Spellverki commanded. One of the entrance guards was about to motion for the Giant to enter when Skjalfti backhanded the smaller Jotun out of his way knocking him to the floor. " Stay away from me little Jotun, or I will kill you as I did the one who ordered me to come here ! " he shouted at the Jotun who was writhing on the floor in pain.
" Was that really necessary ?! " Spellvirki asked the huge Jotun. Skjalfti ignored the question. " Why have I been ordered to come here !? " the angry Jotun demanded to know. Spellvirki, who was not intimidated by the huge Giant's anger, smiled at him. " Well, I thought you might enjoy killing a few humans, ripping apart a Midgardian kingdom, and gaining revenge on Odin ..... But if you are not interested my friend you can leave the way that you came ! " Spellvirki told him sarcastically.
Skjalfti' s anger dissipated, and was replaced by a look of surprise and curiosity. " It sounds like you have a plan my friend ! But if this involves Odin it had better be a damned good one !! " he told the king with a twinge of anger in his voice. Spellvirki walked over to the huge Giant, and stood on his toes to look him in the eyes. " Oh, I think you are going to like this quite a little bit my friend ! " he told him with a huge grin.
