383. Love Can Conquer All
Eirik was a Norwegian Jarl with almost a thousand Vikings to command ,
To protect and defend her kingdom was the oath that she once swore,
The Norwegian Jarl had come to raid and pillage along the Irish shore.
Their armies fought for three long days, and still there was no clear winner,
After the two great armies finally parted each found itself to be much thinner,
Neither Celtic Princess, nor the Norwegian Jarl, was yet willing to yield,
So they gathered up their remaining forces, once again, upon the killing field.
Princess Máiréad stood proud and tall across from him on the field of battle,
While Eirik sat brave and stoic, with his sword in hand, mounted in his saddle,
They studied their opponent across the battlefield, stared each other in the eye,
Both wanted to stop the horrible slaughter, but neither was afraid to die.
Then the Jarl decided that he was not willing to sacrifice his army of the Norse,
Jarl Eirik put away his mighty sword, and then dismounted from his horse,
The Norseman slowly walked to the midpoint between the armies on the field,
There Eirik stopped and with a mighty blow buried in the earth his Viking shield.
Her warriors strongly protested, but Princess Máiréad would not be denied,
The Celtic Princess put away her sword, matched her opponent stride for stride,
She stopped a few feet away from him, buried her shield deep in the ground,
And there they stood for quite some time, with neither of them making a sound.
Then the Jarl removed his helmet, revealed the golden hair upon his head,
In turn the princess removed her crown, and the curls that fell were red,
Jarl Eirik bowed ever so slightly, smiled, then reached out and kissed her hand,
Princess Máiréad looked into his blue eyes, and her army stood down at her command.
They talked for many hours, with Princess Máiréad playing the good host,
In the end Jarl Eirik left her lands, and instead he raided the English coast.
With grace, and great beauty, the Princess did not allow her kingdom to fall,
Máiréad won the final battle, without a fight, because love can conquer all.
