423. The Evil Water Spirit
Planted long ago the great Water Spirit sprouted from evil seeds,
It grew powerful over a millennium hiding among the tangled weeds,
Only winter tames it's heartless soul, and soothes the urge to feast,
It's hunger buried deep in ice, formed from cold winds from the east.
After the snows have ended, and the pond begins to slowly thaw,
Evil awakens, a desperate spirit whose anger runs deep and raw,
As the ice above cracks and separates under Sunna's warming rays,
The Nøkken emerges from it's long evernight into the light of days.
When the long stems slowly rise from the bottom of the murky pond,
So too a ravenous Water Spirit reaches up from the great beyond,
And when the lily pads break the surface and the Nøkkeroser bloom,
The pond becomes for humankind nothing more than a watery tomb.
Singing an enticing song the Nøkken draws it's prey to the water's edge,
There to pull their victim slowly down to where human's fear to dredge,
In time the human's body will fill with gas, forcing it to rot and bloat,
And to the pond's surface it will eventually rise, there to bob and float.
It's hunger satisfied, for it has taken a soul, the Nøkken now can rest,
Until it must use it's evil song as bait, so that it can once again molest,
This violent creature lies in wait for us, and all mankind should fear it,
It is known to most as a Nøkken, and it is surely an evil Water Spirit.
