424. The Valkyrie's Daughter
Pierced by the point of a spear, and stabbed by an enemy's knife,
Eirik, an injured warrior, limped slowly to the edge of a nearby lake,
With every agonizing footstep he felt the strength fading from his life,
There was no real purpose for his struggle, other than death's sake.
A final lunge dropped him down into the thick mud at the water's edge,
It was then that the dark thought came upon him that death was near,
With his breath shallow, to All - Father Odin, Eirik made his last pledge,
" I will join you soon in Valhalla, an einherjar who will never show fear."
As Eirik's world began to spin, and his vision slowly became blurred,
A beautiful white creature suddenly appeared floating out on the water,
At first it paid him little attention, but then something in the swan stirred,
When it stepped upon the shore it revealed itself a Valkyrie's daughter.
With large wings as pure white as the most beautiful cloud in the sky,
Swanhild comforted the wounded warrior in feathers soft and warm,
For Odin had commanded her not to allow such a brave warrior to die,
She became his warmth on cold nights, and protection from the storm.
Over time, Swanhild nursed the badly injured Eirik back to perfect health,
The warrior tried to convince her to fly away, to be no longer here confined,
Eirik offered her much happiness, and even the chance for great wealth,
However Swanhild politely refused, and swam away to be with her own kind.
