215. Beasts Of The Nine Worlds
( A Child's Poem )
Tanngrisner and Tanngnostr pull the cart of mighty Thor,
All - Father Odin rides Sleipnir, his eight - legged horse,
And our beautiful Freyja has her pet felines of course.
Garm is the hound whose bite is worse than its bark,
And Fenrir is the wolf who is chained up in the dark,
The squirrel Ratatosk runs up and down the world tree,
While Jormungand, the serpent, lives deep in the sea.
The ravens Hugin and Munin, are the eyes of Odin,
And his Valkyries swim round wearing a swan' s skin,
Audhumla, the proto - cow, nourishes Ymir the Giant,
Saehrimnir is the pig on which the Einherjar are reliant.
The harts are deer that nibble on the leaves of Yggdrasil,
While Nidhogg gnaws on its roots until it has had its fill,
With Odin's own food the wolves Geri and Freki do feed,
Habrok is a hawk which is known as the best of its breed.
The goat Heidrun eats foliage, and from it mead flows,
Hraesvelg flaps its wings, and the north wind blows,
Skoll is the mighty wolf who chases after the sun,
And the beast Managarm keeps the moon on the run.
These are the names of nine world beasts to remember,
From the first day of January to the end of December,
Practice and recite them often to yourself and out loud,
and you will make our Gods and Goddesses very proud !
