235. Fighting For The Homeland
He cried out his message, raised the alarm.
Danes were coming, they had crossed the border,
Raping and pillaging, and causing great disorder.
The merchants and blacksmiths ran out to the road,
Farmers left crops where their carts had been towed.
They grabbed their bows, swords, spears, and axes,
Picked up their shields, and sharpened their seaxes.
They met in the grove where the king had his great hall,
Brave warriors one and all, ready and eager for a brawl.
The king gathered his men, then from up in the saddle,
Led his men to the site, where the armies would battle.
A thousand men faced each other from across a dirt field,
The older warriors knew that many fates were now sealed.
As the enemy crashed hard into the Viken shield wall,
Both the Danes, and the Vikens began quickly to fall.
The ground swiftly began to be covered in warrior blood,
As many of the brave warriors slowly bled out in the mud.
The Vikens fought hard, kept the Danes from their town,
The battle ran all day, continued after the sun went down.
The Dane warriors fought hard for gold and for their glory,
But the Viken warriors were fighting for their home territory,
The Danes slowly lost, because they fought only for greed,
It was the love of their homeland made the Vikens succeed !
