218. Iceland's Great Defenders
During the reign of Norway's King Olaf Tryggvason,
We hear of a King of Denmark, named Harald Bluetooth,
Who was most determined to invade the Island of Iceland.
He called forth a great wizard, who put forth a magical plan,
Said he would find the best beach to land the king's ships,
The wizard changed his spirit into the form of a whale,
And swam for the far shores of the land of fire and ice.
The whale entered Vopnafjordur, and attempted to come ashore,
But a Dreki flew down the fjord and chased after the whale,
The winged beast was followed by serpents spitting poison,
And they forced the spirit of the great wizard back out to sea.
The whale then went to the west coast looking for an entrance,
It swam slowly, and cautiously, up the Eyjafjordur in deep water,
Suddenly, a Gammur swept down on wings as wide as the fjord,
With other attacking birds of every type it chased the whale away.
Still not discouraged the wizard- whale continued west and south,
When it reached the Breidafjordur, it swam inland to find a beach,
Standing over the fjord an angry Griðungur stood roaring in anger,
With it were many land spirits, which helped chase the whale away.
The whale went further south still, tried to reach the Vikarsskeid,
But there was a Bergrisi who stood much higher than the hills,
Seeing no way in the whale swam back to Denmark to report,
And this is how the landvaettir saved Iceland from Harald Bluetooth.
