327. The Arctic Fox
Lies an ecosystem that almost anyone would dread.
Throughout this region, where gale force winds blow,
Lives a tiny creature hidden against the blinding snow.
This beautiful furry animal calls the polar region its home,
And here on the hard tundra in search of food it will roam.
If you look carefully it is possible to see among the dark rocks,
The black eyes of the canine scavenger known as the Arctic fox.
With ears so sharp it can hear movement under the snow,
It listens very carefully to detect if there is prey down below.
This sly hunter can chase down the fastest of Arctic hares,
Or it can feast on the remains of a carcass left by polar bears.
In the cold winter months its coat turns to the purest of white,
Against the glare of the snow it blends in, keeping out of sight.
When along comes the spring its fur becomes slightly browned,
In this way it remains well hidden on the newly thawed ground.
In a world damaged by man, and an environment deeply scarred,
Still exists a region where the elements keep man almost barred.
Journey to this inhospitable land, and you will be fortunate to see,
There on the tundra the great Arctic fox roaming happily and free.
