279. The Forest Imp
Her mother Hilda' s good advice, and go out and explore.
She journeyed into the spring forest to pick pretty flowers,
Hrefna lost track of time, did not notice the passing hours.
When the evening sky slowly turned from gray to pitch black,
Little Hrefna decided that it was now time for her to head back.
But even before her long journey to her home could begin,
She fell over an exposed root, and scraped badly her shin.
It was then Hrefna understood her disobedience came at a cost,
As she looked around it became clear that she had become lost.
Just when it seemed to Hrefna that nothing could scare her more,
She heard something rustling in the leaves on the dark forest floor.
Hrefna turned and tried to run, but her scraped shin made her limp,
When she fell again, she saw above her an ugly little Forest Imp.
Little Hrefna began to shake, she was scared and began to cry,
Curious, the Imp reached down, and brushed the tear from her eye.
When the strange creature touched her, she let out quite a yell,
In pain the little Imp covered his big ears, and backwards he fell.
From the ground both stared at one another not knowing what to do,
Then the Imp pointed at the little girl, and asked: " Who are you ! "
" My name is Hrefna ." she told the Imp." And I want to go home ! "
She cried : " I got lost even though my mother told me not to roam ! "
The Forest Imp told her : " If you promise to be as quiet as a mouse,
I will show you little Hrefna the path that leads back to your house.
The little Forest Imp took her by the hand, showed Hrefna the way,
When they reached her house he said : " It is here you must stay ! "
With tears in her eyes she kissed the little Forest Imp on the head,
Then before the sun could rise, back to the dark forest the Imp fled.
