Listen closely to me my friends, I will tell you a very sad story,
That begins with the Franks who invaded the Saxon' s territory.
The Franks first subjugated the Engrians in the year 773,
and then destroyed their sacred symbol the Irminsul Tree.
Widukind, the brave Saxon leader, refused to go to Paderborn,
For his refusal the Saxon chief received Charlemagne's scorn.
Branded in the Frankish court as a Pagan, and a traitor,
Widukind knew he would fight the Franks sooner than later.
In a field in Verden lay our honored warrior' s dead,
4, 500 Saxons were massacred that day it is said.
Our brave Germanic warriors lay motionless in the dirt,
Charlemagne' s judgement for those who would not convert.
Westphalians, Eastphalians, Nordabingians, and Engrians arose,
As Saxon Pagans stood with honor, for the Christians to oppose.
One by one the Germanic peoples took up arms and did fight,
They fought bravely, but sadly, were defeated by Frankish might.
