This morning I was watching several news broadcasts and one of the political issues they were talking about was Christine O' Donnell and her admission, on a 1999 Bill Maher show, that she had dabbled in witchcraft when she was younger. She said that she had "dabbled" in witchcraft but did not join a coven. The news organizations were all playing it up as an issue that she had to answer for. Before I go any further let me just say that I have no great love for the Tea Party or for her in particular, but why does she have to justify, "dabbling", in witchcraft ? Don't we have freedom of religious expression in this country ? Even if she were a practicing Wiccan, who cares ! Don't Pagans have the right to run for public office ?! Besides could a Pagan do any worse than the Christians have done over the past 20 years ? That's right you cannot blame the Pagans, or Muslims, or Hindus or buddhists, etc... This mess the country is in was made mainly by Christians.
Actually I think we already have people in Congress who practice witchcraft ! I know my money magically disappears every time they pass another spending bill and raise taxes. And I know that the Fed has magically kept interest rates so low that it is impossible for the average American to make any real interest on our bank accounts.
I say leave her alone on her past religious beliefs and judge her on her political, ethical, and moral views. They are scary enough! Lets keep religion out of politics and put it back in the Churches and Temples where it belongs !
The second thing I heard this morning, on CNN this time, came from two Tea Party supporters who were complaining that they did not trust Barack Obama's Christianity. They went on to say that he always seems to "lean" towards the Muslims. Of course implying that he himself was actually Muslim. Of course she missed the fact that Obama was seen going to church on Sunday. Even if he was Muslim does that mean he does not have the right to hold office ?
Why do right wing Christians want to exclude anyone who is not like them and from their perfect little vision of the world. Christians always see others as a threat or evil, especially Pagans, and feel they must keep us out of mainstream America. I say that there is nothing more dangerous than those who suppress others because they are different. I am called a Pagan, though I prefer Asatruar, and I am 100% sure that I am less of a danger than those Christians on the right who want to take back America and restore values, ( Theirs of course ) ! I will say this just once more.... Religion has no business in politics !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
