Thanksgiving is also a wonderful time to reflect on everything we have received in life. The Gods and Goddesses know far too well that we spend too much time reflecting on everything we don't have ! There are a great couple of lines in Havamal that I like to use that reinforce this point :
" Be it little better to live in a house you hold as your own with just two goats, thin thatch for roof, you are better off than begging".
"Though it be little better to live in a house you hold as your own a man's heart breaks if he has to beg for everything he eats".
We spend way too much time being distraught over the things that we don't have, or may never have, which makes us forget to look around at all that we do have in our lives. In this world today everyone seems to be striving for material goods that are just outside their means. Many have put themselves in financial ruin trying to live the "Life of Riley". I prefer to live the "Life of Glenn". I have a small house, which, thank the Gods, is paid off. I recently turned one of my rooms into a small library to house my 1,500 books. I would love to drive a cadillac or a sports car but I am just as happy with my little Chevy. I am very happy and satisfied with my life because I live within the confines of my means. And the best things I have didn't cost a thing. They are the Gods and Goddesses and my friends !
I am also thankful for finding Sveinbjorg Beinteinsson and new friends from our Asatru religion. I am thankful that our religion, like my Spring Equinox seed planting, is still growing and flowering into something wonderful. I watch the Scandinavian countries with wonder at all the strides and milestones they are reaching with our religion. But most of all I am thankful to Odin for life's breath, Hoenir for thought, and Lodur for fairness of face. The gift of life is the best gift of all to be thankful for.
Finally, I thank all of you readers who put up with my rambling rhetoric. I don't know why the Gods and Goddesses want me to write these articles, ( Surely they know I am not very good at it ), but I made an oath with the Triad to do this for one year and I am very thankful for the opportunity to share with you what Odin, Freyja and Thor have shown me. So to all who read this I say Happy Thanksgiving.
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
