In wooden longships with both oars and sail
Carrying weapons and shields, they couldn't fail
The invading army came from out of the North
Stepped out of their ships, then marched forth
Charles the Bald divided his force
To fight hard warriors known as the Norse
He placed his men on both sides of the river
These strong Viking men made the Franks shiver.
Fierce Norse warriors stood at the ready
Disciplined Vikings held their lines steady
When Ragnar Lodbrok ordered the attack
The Frankish army was quickly thrown back
The Vikings took prisoners, a hundred or more
They hung them right up, next to the shore
There they swung for King Charles to view
The Christians were outraged, but what could they do ?
With masts filled with wind, and soldiers with rage
They showed the Parisians that this was their Age
Ragnar and his men then sailed up the river Seine
They looted, they pillaged, and caused so much pain.
King Charles was terrified he wanted no more
He even allowed them to keep their spoils of war
7000 pounds of silver he paid them to leave
The Franks were left there to cry and to grieve.
The peace King Charles bought lasted not long
Paying off the Vikings turned out to be wrong
The lure of the Danegeld brought warriors back
Over and over the Norsemen would attack.
