At one point in this article the writer stated that our Pagan Gods only exist in our Pagan minds ! Which of course is just another example of their narrow - minded thought process that the possibility of other Gods is impossible, and only their religion and their God is the real religion of the world. How do they think that statements like that represent reaching out to us ? The article, by the second part, was even worse. It was a clear and blatant attempt to convert Pagans to their religion and their God. They were not reaching out , but were reaching behind us to stab us in the back as they always do. The person who placed this article on his site defended it as Christians who were at least trying to meet us halfway, but myself, and several other commenters were not buying it . We saw right through this veiled attempt at conversion ! And the sad thing is that I do not believe that it will ever change, because it is part of their religious dogma to convert others to their religion. This conversion, and baptism philosophy dates back, of course, to John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ himself, and is too engraved onto their psyche to, in my opinion, ever change . I have found that trying to talk, or reason with, hardcore Christians is a waste of time, and that anything and everything that we say will be used against us in a forum of their choosing. You cannot reason with people who are unflexible and unwilling to see, or try to understand, the points of view of others when it comes in direct conflict with their religious beliefs.Last year for instance I tried to convince quite a few ministers and priests from the various denominations in my area to do an interview on my blog to give their perspective on our religion, and the differences that keep us apart. I was met with a wall of indifference, if not downright anger and contempt . The few who were "kind" just scoffed at the idea !
The Christians will NEVER understand us no matter how much they pretend to try. We live in this world, and live to honor our past, our ancestors, and great Mother Earth. Nature itself and the wonders of our great universe are a part of our religious dogma and are blended into our love for our Gods and Goddesses. But most of all we live for today, and honor our ancestors by living by a code of ethics, "The Nine Noble Virtues", that if we ignore we will be punished for. The Christians live for the hereafter, and feel that their Christ died for their sins, and that if they say a few Hail Mary's all is forgiven. They break their ten commandments on a daily basis, in part I believe, because of this notion of forgiveness. Why not commit adultery or a crime ! I' ll be forgiven ! Or I guess the new term is "born again". As a priest in the Asatru religion I do not have the ability to absolve anyone of their sins. Only the Gods themselves can do that, and I feel that they will not be quite as forgiving as these Catholic priests are !
Unfortunately we need to be careful when Christians reach out to us, because most of the time they have ulterior motives hidden behind their gentle words and kind gestures. To most Christians we are just a misguided lot who are damned for eternity, and it is their duty...... no, their right, to persuade, coax, or even force us into conversion to save our souls. Well, the Christians had better wake up, and wake up soon, because this is not the year 1000 A.D. Unlike that wild Viking time, we now have a weapon that our Viking ancestors did not have; we have the right of religious freedom, and the courts will act as our shield. They need to either deal with us in a respectful manner, or leave us alone. Our non - monotheistic Pagan religions are the fasting growing religions in the world, and we will never allow anyone to destroy us again !
