Gudmond searched the horizon from the shore,
Egil, his father, had sailed nine months before,
For lands far, far away, to wage in war,
To return home, to him, his father had swore.
His mother, Asgerd, watched from up on the hill,
Her heart was breaking, her thoughts were still.
Tears filled her eyes, she leaned on the sill,
and thought of Odin's sacrifice on Yggdrasil.
Would her husband lose his life in a distant land ?
Or like Great Warrior God Tyr lose just a hand ?
Would his triumphant return be very grand ?
Or would his body never return to Gotland ?
Then from down on the beach she heard a wail.
Mother ! Mother ! I see father's square sail !
On the deck, still dressed in coat of mail,
Stood Egil, who smiling, waved from the rail !
