Charles Pollard Jr. was a 66 year old who lived in Alabama, and drove a school bus to help support himself and his wife after retiring as a diesel mechanic. Charles loved his job as a bus driver and felt that once the children entered his bus they were in his care and his responsibility. Although his wife of 44 years, Jan, described her husband as an honest and quiet man who almost never disciplined his own children, he stood up to the gunman who entered his bus demanding two children as hostages. After refusing the gunman's request ( I will not mention the dishonorable man's name ) Charles hit an emergency button on the bus and tried to dial 911 to summon help. The gunman then shot the 66 year old man dead, and then abducted a child who he is still, at this writing, holding a home - made bunker in Midland Alabama.
I honor Charles Pollard Jr. for acting in a brave and honorable manner in trying to protect the children that he had in his care, and I curse before the Gods the criminal who hid behind a gun to kill him. I ask Mother Frigga and All - Father Odin to help the child, who has been held for five days as of this writing, and not allow harm to come to this five year old boy, who I have been told is autistic.
A sad fact about cases like this is that most will remember the gunman's name, but the true hero, the one who should be honored by being remembered for all time, will probably fade from our memories after only a short time. I stand here before Odin and ask the Gods that Charles Pollard Jr. NEVER be forgotten for his brave deed. For he gave the final measure of any man, he gave his life for others !
