The performers are as varied at the festival as the food ! One of my favorites, and one that has been entertaining at the festival for years, is Eric Olsen. This incredible jazz pianist mixes modern, and classical music with jazz to create a fusion of sound that is just wonderful to listen to ! This year I just have to see if any of his music is available on CD, so I can listen to it year round !
This year for the first time an ABBA tribute band will be entertaining their audience with some of the best known and loved of ABBA's hits. I loved their music as a kid, and have to admit that I had a little crush on the blonde woman ! I am very much looking foward to seeing them, and enjoying their performance.
Lauren Marek, an American of Finnish descent, who lived in Finland for a few years, will be performing Finnish music called
' Varttina '. ( I hope I spelled that right ! ) I love the tribal beats of some Finnish music, and very much look foward to hearing her sing. A few years ago they had two young women who sang Finnish songs, and they were very good. I am sure that Lauren Marek will not disappoint either.
Unfortunately there are too many acts to describe each one in detail so I will just list them here :
The American Nyckelharpa Association
Brent Buswell ( Accordionist )
The Daughters of Scandinavia
Marcia Boyesen and Roger Latzgo
Ruth Ann Cunningham ( A fine soprano )
Skansen Children's Club Dancers
Swedish Folk Dancers of New York
There are also the Von Halstern Medieval Reenactors, lectures on heritage, the Viking longships, and my favorite the wife carrying contest. There is something her at the ' Scanfest 2012 ' for everyone, and I highly recommend it to anyone living in the Tri - State area. I just wish I could talk them into either making it a two day event, or at least extending it a few hours. I always hate to see it end.
The blessing I say at the festival every year : ( Shhhh ! Don't tell the Christians ! )
Among the trees, fields and groves of what we have named Vasa Park in the beautiful town of Budd Lake, we have gathered here this day, at this special moment in time to bless both this event and place We bless it not with our presence but by the wills of our Gods and Goddesses who have stood by our sides through the ages We bless it not with these feeble words but by the memories of our ancestors who walked this earth generations before. We bless it with our ancient sacred culture, and by the very blood that runs through our veins, and that beats as one heart, and one people Aesir Gods, Vanir Gods, Hear my call ! Bless these fields we walk this day and bless also those who traverse them. May they go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection ! May the mighty Gods and Goddesses watch over us this day and every day !
The festival is held the Sunday before Labor day every year and the address is :
