Brynhild : The Youngest Valkyrie
The Stench Of Death
The next day, while walking along a beautiful lake, he spied something swinging from a tree by the water's edge. As he came closer he could see that it was the body of a man which swung in the light breeze. Odin chanted a spell, and the man fell to the ground. Odin propped the man up against the tree with as much care as if he had been alive, and then chanted another magical spell. The man opened his dead eyes, and he spoke to Odin. The man told the great wanderer that his name was Thorvald, and that he and his wife had come to the lake to enjoy what was a beautiful day. " As we sat there enjoying the warm sunshine two men approached us and threatened me for my money, and other valuables. I gave the men what little I had with me, but still they were not satisfied. They beat me until I was insensible, and could not pick myself up off of the ground. Then they raped my wife repeatedly while I lay there helpless. When they were done with her they stabbed her repeatedly as she screamed in pain, and still I could not lift a hand to help her ! Then they put a rope around my my neck and hung me in this tree here by the lake. " Thorvald said through his cracked dead lips. Odin had heard enough ! He chanted a few words, and the man fell back into death. And Odin's heart grew colder.
A few days later when the moon was full, he passed over a field where it was obvious that a battle had taken place. Warriors lay scattered everywhere upon the ground as far as his eye could see. There were so many bodies in fact that Odin could not take more than a few steps before having to change direction to avoid a bloated corpse. Suddenly, a light crossed the sky, in the form of a horse, and landed close by All - Father. When the battle - clad warrior dismounted from her horse she walked over to Odin, and knelt on one knee before Valhalla' s lord. " I am surprised to see you here my lord ! This was not a major battle, but a rather insignificant battle between two equally insignificant local chieftains. " she told him. Odin gave the Valkyrie a mean look. " And yet there lie the honorable dead, with their blood soaking into the soil ! " Odin told her angrily. " Are their deaths insignificant ?! " he shouted at her. " I am sorry Valfather ! I did not mean to minimize the importance of their deaths. " the Valkyrie told him with a bowed head. Odin regretted shouting at the Valkyrie almost immediately, and placed his hand on her shoulder as he again spoke to her. " Take them to the great hall, my friend. I will sit with them soon ! " he said calmly. " By your command my Lord ! " she answered. As the Valkyrie left to gather up the dead, Odin slowly walked off the now hallowed battle ground. And his heart grew ever colder !
