The Wisdom Of Odin
Odin shifted his gaze to where King Hallkell stood beating a man for some offense in their camp. " He is a brutal king who rules through fear and intimidation, a merciless warrior, a sadistic man,..... and he beats his wife. " he told Loki. Loki smiled. " A king should rule with an iron fist ! " Loki told the All - Father boldly. Odin ignored the comment, and then continued : " His father was the ferocious King Heming. Heming fought his way to Ranrike's high seat. Anyone and everyone who got in his way he killed. Sometimes he wiped out whole families. These were the lessons that he taught his three sons, Hallkell, Tryggvi, and Skeggi. And they learned this lesson very well. One day the brothers conspired together and killed their father. The brothers had agreed to split the kingdom into three equal parts, but this blood oath, which they took in my name, did not last for very long. Hallkell attacked and killed Skeggi first, along with his brother's wife and children. Then he hunted down Tryggvi when he tried to flee Norway, tortured and killed him as well. It was then that Hallkell went on a rampage throughout Ranrike killing anyone whom had once been loyal to his brothers. The horror lasted for three years ! " Odin told him. Loki gave Odin an evil grin. " I like the man already ! A ruthless man should be in a position of great power ! " he told Odin. The All- Father did not reply.
Slowly Odin pointed to the other side of the valley. " Do you see that older man seated on the brown horse ? " he asked. Loki followed Odin' s finger. " The older man with the gray hair ? " Loki asked. Odin nodded. " Yes ! That is KIng Eyjolf of Viken. He is an honorable man, a skilled warrior, a generous ruler, and a loving husband and father. His father was the great KIng Bjorn. When Bjorn died Eyjolf became the ruler of Viken. " he told Loki. The trickster gave Odin a sly grin. " Did Eyjolf murder his father as well to gain the kingdom ? " Loki asked. Odin shook his head. " No. Eyjolf loved his father, and honored him in death as he had in life. He constructed for his father a great grave mound and filled it with everything his father would need in the afterlife. " Odin explained.
Loki shook his head in disappointment. " He does not sound like a great warrior to me my friend ! " he told Odin. All - Father narrowed his eye and replied : " Many times King Eyjolf had to defend his throne and his kingdom. Each time he did it successfully, and gained great honor for himself, and his kingdom. He is greatly respected by his warriors, and his subjects for his fairness and generosity. " Loki took a deep breath. " It seems to me that his kindness is a weakness that will someday,..... probably today, lose him his life ! " Loki said. Odin looked at Loki and then down into the valley. " That is what will be determined on this battlefield my old friend. " he told Loki.
Loki studied both men closely. King Hallkell of Ranrike was a huge monster of a man. He was twice the size of King Eyjolf, and easily half his age. The trickster laughed when he saw that the muscles in King Hallkell' s arms were as large as the legs of King Eyjolf . Loki thought to himself : " Their armies are of equal size, but there is not a chance in the nine worlds for that skinny old man to defeat the rugged King Hallkell ! " While Loki was studying the physique of the older king he saw something very strange. Standing just behind Eyjolf's horse was a large man holding a three bladed spear in his hand. Loki thought to himself : " That looks just like........ No ! It cannot be ! " Loki looked over at Odin, and was about to tell him what he saw, but Odin was gone !
