Moving past the Christian Roman Age, we come to that most evil of emperors Charlemagne, who, in 774, decided that the Saxon Pagans were to be given a simple ultimatum, baptism or death ! He put this into devastating effect at what is known as the Massacre at Verden, when he beheaded over 4000 Saxons who refused to convert.
The Spanish Inquisition also later played a role in killing those who were charged with witchcraft under the superstition clause. In Logrono, on 11/17/1610, 6 people were burned to death under these bogus charges. But the witch hunts were much worse in France, Scotland, and Germany, where thousands upon thousands died. Even here in America, before our freedom from Great Britain, there were several witch trials, the most famous being of course the Salem witch trials.
The other day I was thinking about two recent groups who received compensation for being persecuted unjustly. These two groups were the Japanese who were incarcerated in camps here in America during WWII, and of course the Jewish people who were almost wiped out in Europe by the Germans during that same war. Both the American government, and the German government, paid out huge amounts of money in reparations. Maybe it is time for we Asatru, and other Pagan religions, who were persecuted and almost wiped out to be compensated by the Vatican and other Christian groups. Back in 2000, Pope John Paul II, prayed for forgiveness saying: " Christians have often denied the Gospel; yielding to a mentality of power, they have violated the rights of ethnic groups and peoples, and shown contempt for their cultures and religious traditions." So the Vatican admits their role in our persecution.
I don't think that the lawsuit should be extravagant, but just enough to build temples in all the Scandinavian countries, Iceland, Germany, France, America, and other countries that had a strong Pagan tradition. The first temple in my opinion should be built at Uppsala, in Sweden. For that was the last temple to fall. Can the Christians afford such expenses ? Well, they would not have to build all of them at once, they could do it slowly over a number of years. The Catholic church's money problems are caused by lawsuits brought against priests who can't keep their hands off of little children, so I have little sympathy for them !
Do I think this could actually happen ? Yes, I believe so ! I feel that the "crimes against humanity" that they have committed against us, and our ancestors, is deserving of compensation. And I am not asking for compensation for individuals, just the restoration of our temples. Our ancestors had their rights as human beings taken away from them, as well as their freedom, and in many cases their lives. A few temples, recognition and an apology seem a small amount to pay in compensation for the centuries of religious terror they reigned over Europe !
