On the East Coast of the United States , and for that matter a good portion of the U.S., the Winter of 2013-2014 has been one of the worst on record. Words like Spring, Spring Equinox, and Vernal Equinox have a special meaning when you are coming out of the darkness and biting cold of a brutal Winter. These words summon forth feelings of joy, hope and pure happiness, that only the rebirth of life can instill in us, during this wonderful time of year. Personally, I think these feelings are primeval in nature and it is almost as though they are ingrained as part of our instinctive behavior. Can anyone honestly say that they don't feel something special on a nice sunny warm spring day ? Something locked up inside of us that wants to burst out and sing ! O' k maybe the singing is a little over the top, but I think everyone knows the feelings that I speak of. To me Spring is like a medicine that quells a deep ache inside of me that started at the end of Autumn, and whose emptiness grew like a tumor through the harsh Winter months . Spring heals in a matter of days what it took long Winter months to infect.
Spring is the great promise of both internal and external hope. It is something we can see with our eyes, and feel in our hearts. As another Fimbulvetr has been avoided, and Ragnarok postponed for yet another year, we can now concentrate on, and celebrate, another year of renewal and life. And life will return in all its varied forms to repopulate, regenerate, and reinvigorate our spectacular natural world. From the smallest insect, to the largest mammal; from the tiniest flower, to the largest tree, life is sensing the perceptible change in light and temperature to re - emerge and join the world of the living.
The Spring Equinox is not just a time to celebrate the re - awakening of life, but a time to re - access our lives, and to set goals with a renewal of purpose and determination. It is a time to give instead of receive, to care instead of showing indifference, and to learn to love again, and put away your hate. It is a time to let your soul, through your actions, bloom like a flower for all to see and appreciate. Most of all it is a time to honor the Gods and Goddesses for all that they do for us, not just this day, but everyday !
I see nature, Mother Nature,( possibly Ostara ) itself as a magical, but invisible Goddess, whose powers are far - reaching, and immense. For She literally holds life in her hands. There could also not be any " Spring Magic ", without either Shining Sunna and Great Mother Earth Jord, and they are both honored greatly in my ritual for the Spring Equinox. I also honor both of the fertility Gods / Goddesses, Freyr and Freyja. And of course great Odin and his brothers for creating all that which is ! When I think of Spring, I think it brings to mind at once the fertility of the land, plants and animals. It is truly a time to reproduce. Finally, I honor the great protector of Midgard, and the friend to the common man, and farmers, Mighty Thor.
As I did during my Charming of the Plow ritual I plant seeds in my flower pots to honor life itself, which is , of course, the greatest gift given to us by the Gods and Goddesses. A few years ago I was extremely blessed because some of my flowers, the Alyssum , lasted until the first week of December ! Last year I was not so lucky.
I also take a moment during the ritual to kneel before Mother Jord, and ask for her forgiveness for the way that we have treated her over the past few years. And we have much to be sorry for ! It is amazing how much damage we do, on a daily basis to the very planet we live on ! But Great Mother Earth Jord is amazing in her ability to heal herself when we injure her. Whether it takes just a few years, or 10,000 years, She will mend the damage that we have caused. And She will of course continue on for many years after we are gone.
On March 20th, at 12: 57 P.M. E.D.T., I will be out, ( You cannot honor Spring indoors ),and honoring our great Spring Gods and Goddesses, Sunna, Jord, Odin, Freyja, Freyr, and Thor. Most of all I will be honoring the great unknown Goddess known only as Mother Nature ( Ostara ?). Though she does not put forth all of these wonderful growing, and living things just for us, we are the ones who seem to benefit the most from them. For that reason I honor Her most of all. May the mighty Gods and Goddesses continue to bless us with the great renewal of life that we call Spring for millennium to come !
