Earl Freki of Halogaland had a beautiful daughter who was named Unn. Storvirk became infatuated with her, and kidnapped her. Together they had a son named Starkad. Earl Freki sent his sons Fjori and Fyri after Storvirk along with a number of warriors. They surrounded his farm, and burned down the house that Storvirk and Unn were hiding in, killing them both.
Starkad we are told was young when his father was killed. ( Obviously he was not in the house at the time that Fjori and Fyri burned it down.) King Harald raised Starkad in his own court, because of the loyalty that Storvirk had shown him through the years. Starkad, however, did not find peace in King Harald' s court. One night King Herthjof of Hordaland came to King Harald' s lands and killed the king, and then took the king's son Vikar as a hostage. King Herthjof conquered all of Harald' s kingdom of Agder, and exacted tribute from the inhabitants by taking hostages.
Starkad was only three when King Harald was killed. He was taken in by one of the King Herthjof's best men, Grani Horsehair, and raised in Fehring. Starkad grew to be an exceptionally big boy, and very strong as well. At 12 years old Vikar came to the town of Ask where Starkad was living, and told Starkad that he had gathered men to go after King Herthjof to gain vengeance for the death of his father. When Vikar and Starkad came to the castle of King Herthjof they found it to be well fortified, and defended by 70 warriors. Starkad himself tells us of the battle :
" We reached the king's residence,
rammed the gates,
hacked and hewed
the doors and the hinges.
We unsheathed our swords,
and smashed the locks,
we set our faces,
not simply against the slaves,
and workmen and water - carriers,
but against 70 royal warriors !
King Herthjof held out for quite a long time, but in the end Vikar and Starkad, who fought side by side, were too much for the king and his men . It is said that King Herthjof fell along with 30 of his men, and many more were wounded, but Vikar lost not one of his brave warriors.
To the victors go the spoils of war, and so Vikar took King Herthjof's ships and sailed along the coast until he came to the Province of Agder. There he met up with those who had been friends with his father. When the inhabitants saw such a large army of men they made Vikar king over Agder and Jaederen. He then continued with his warriors and added Hordaland, and Hardanger as well. King Vikar and Starkad then reached Lake Vaener where they came up against the mighty army of King Sisar of Kiev. The battle was long and hard fought, and King Sisar himself killed quite a few of Vikar' s men. Vikar and Starkad once again fought side by side, and gave as good as they got. King Sisar wounded Starkad several times. Starkad was wounded twice on the head, and his collar bone was broken. He also received a deep cut to his hip.
Starkad fought relentlessly against King Sisar, and matched him blow for blow. Starkad sliced off part of his side, and wounded him severely below the knee. Then Starkad swung his sword with great might and cut off King Sisar' s leg at the ankle . The victory went to King Vikar who after the great battle went back to his kingdom. Starkad has this to say about his wounds at a later date : " The scars have healed but still you may see them. "
