If you come to my blog looking for some in - depth dissection of our Gods and Goddesses you came to the wrong place. I have always felt that religion is not a science, and doesn't need to be examined under a microscope, or looked at like some math, or science equation. To me religion is part love of the Gods and Goddesses; part pride in our heroes and ancestors; and part faith in our beliefs of all the above listed. Besides, I am not trying to reach those who are "experts" in our religion, but am trying to help those at the beginning to intermediate level. You can call my blog Asatru 101 if you like.
When I first started out, ( heard the whisperings of our Gods and Goddesses ), in our religion there was no internet, no websites to visit, I felt alone and confused ! I remember going to the bookstore and only finding one book on our religion, The Rites Of Odin, by Ed Fitch, and that was located in the New Age section, not the religious section. The Rites Of Odin is a totally inadequate rendering of our religion and practises, and I do not recommend it. Recently books by Galina Krasskova, Diana L. Paxson, and Kveldulf Gundarsson have filled in this "gap" quite nicely. They do , however, tend to tell you that this, or that, is the way it should be done, and sometimes even hint that if you do not do it that way you are dishonoring the Gods and Goddesses. This is something that I absolutely disagree with. No one knows exactly how our ancestors honored our Gods and Goddessses ! I feel that I understand the Gods well enough to know that as long as you honor them in a respectful manner, and with words that come from your heart, our great deities will understand and appreciate your meaning. And if you make a mistake ? It is o'k, our Gods and Goddesses are not that petty, and some of them have quite a good sense of humor !
So welcome to Asatru 101, where over the next few months I will have articles on the great Germanic warrior Arminius, Dwarfs, in three parts, our heavens, nature, and poetry, as well as topical subjects that arise. My ideas are mine, and mine alone. I answer to no organization, kindred, or religious group. I am independent, and my articles reflect a non - biased independent point of view. All are welcome, and all are appreciated ! Comments are always accepted, and I never reject any reasonable thoughts or ideas. The one thing I want to make very clear to all you lone practitioners out there is that you are NOT alone. There are thousands of us out there, and it is quite possible that we form the bulk of the Asatru religion here in America. Someday we will be able to join together, but for now time and space keep us apart. The internet is our meeting place, and our arena for exchanging ideas which help to broaden our religion. Someday, sooner than you may think, we will be strong enough to be considered as a major religion once again. Simply look to Iceland, and the other Scandinavian countries as our model. But for now we have our Gods and Goddesses, and of course each other. Hope to see you soon !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection !
