The Queen Of War
A Wedding Fit For Royalty
Sefa was awakened by the shouting and the screams coming from the great hall, which was not far from their dwelling . She lay there for a moment before asking her husband :
" Bivorr, are you asleep ? "
Bivorr rolled over on his side, placed his elbow on the bed, and his hand under his head, to prop himself up before answering.
" How can anyone sleep with such loud and annoying sounds reverberating out of the great hall ! " he replied with a hint of exhaustion.
Sefa was certain that the great hall would be a quiet place after the death of King Kaldstein, but the marriage feast for Brettifa and Vetr had shattered the silence of the night with the sounds of joy and festivities.
" Don't you think that the married couple has gone to their bed to validate their marriage yet ? " Sefa asked.
Bivorr smiled. He remembered his wedding night as he answered his wife.
" They left the great hall hours ago my dear. When I went out to pee I saw the torchlight procession marching over to their hut. " he told his wife.
Sefa narrowed her eyes.
" Are you sure that it was the consummation procession that you saw ? " she asked.
Bivorr sat up in bed and gave his wife a cross look.
" Yes ! Yes, of course I am sure ! The queen, acting as Godia, led the procession, while the couple marched in the middle of three male, and three female witnesses all holding torches. " he explained in an annoyed tone.
Sefa gave her husband a playful look.
" Then why is the marriage feast still so raucous in the great hall ? " she inquired.
Bivorr bent over and kissed his wife on the forehead.
" Because my love the queen gave them a marriage feast fit for royalty. Everyone, who is anyone came from miles around , and I doubt very much that the celebration will break up before dawn. " he informed her.
Now fully awake, Sefa kissed her husband on the lips.
" It was a beautiful hand fasting ritual wasn't it my dear !? " she half asked, and half told her husband.
" Yes, the queen spared no expense for the loving couple. Birsla sacrificed two goats to Thor, and three boars to Freyja. She was so generous to Vetr and Brettifa . " he told his wife.
Sefa sat up and clapped her hands together.
" I cannot believe that the queen allowed common folk like us to be sprinkled by the hlauteinn. The queen acting as the Godia gave to us the blessing of the Gods !! " she exclaimed happily.
Bivorr laughed sarcastically.
" Yes, there is nothing quite as pleasant as being showered in warm goat's blood ! " he replied.
Sefa narrowed her eyes again.
" When you speak in such a fashion you sound just like those awful Christian priests ! It was a great honor to be included in such a fine PAGAN ritual ! " she explained to her husband.
Bivorr ignored his wife's Christian comment and continued the conversation in a more pleasant tone.
" It was a shame that Vetr did not have an ancestral sword to present Brettifa with though . " Bivorr offered.
Sefa nodded in agreement.
" Yes,.... but I thought it nice of him to give her the sword that he was presented with when he became the commander of the royal guard. " she told him.
Bivorr thought for a moment.
" That was a nice touch ! I think that he made up for it though with the size of that gold ring he gave her. " he said with a nod.
Sefa looked down at her much smaller ring and sighed deeply.
" Yes ! I was able to get a good look at the rings when they were first placed on the horgr. " she agreed.
And then she added :
" Wasn't it sweet when he offered her the ring on the hilt of his new sword ? " she asked.
Bivorr laughed !
" To be honest I was looking more at the hilt of the sword than the exchange. Did you see all the jewels that were inlaid on the hilt ? " he asked.
" The queen really rewarded Vetr for all of his years of faithful service ! " he added before she could answer.
Sefa nudged her husband with her elbow before replying.
" Well ! You know,..... there is a rumor going around that the king was murdered, and that those close to the queen hushed it all up so no one would find out about it ! " Sefa told her husband in a whisper, as though she were telling him where the Rhine gold was hidden.
Bivorr frowned, and pursed his lips.
" Do you really believe that our beloved queen would have covered up the murder of her husband ? " he asked.
Sefa looked away, before answering.
" Well, if she did I would not blame her ! That husband of her's was as evil as Surtr of Muspelheim ! " she replied.
Bivorr nodded in the affirmative.
" You will get no argument from me on that point,..... but Queen Birsla is the finest woman I have ever seen, and the most generous ruler in all of Southern Norway ! I simply refuse to believe that she would have been a party to such a thing ! " he told his wife.
Sefa gave her husband a sly grin.
" You didn't feel that way when you found out we were not invited to the wedding feast in the great hall, as well as the hand fasting ritual . " she reminded her husband.
Bivorr shrugged his shoulders and sighed.
" Yes ! I was a little disappointed at first. But then I realized that there was no way that Queen Birsla could possibly fit everyone into the great hall for a feast, so it only made sense that she had to exclude some people. " he explained.
Just then the frivolity at the great hall rose up in volume once again, and they both looked at one another. Bivorr and Sefa both sighed simultaneously.
" I do not think we will be getting much sleep tonight my dear ! " he told his wife.
Sefa fluttered her eyes, and gave her husband a flirtatious look before answering.
" You know my love we could make a little noise of our own . " she told her husband with a little grin.
Bivorr laughed as he hugged his wife.
" Well, then let the party begin my dear ! " he said with a little chuckle.
