Balder lives in Breidablik , and it is said that this place is in heaven, and that NOTHING in that place can be impure. ( That is why I feel totally inadequate when honoring Balder, how can any God compare to all that, let alone a flawed Midgardian such as myself !)
Balder is married to the loving and devoted Nanna Nepsdottir, and together they have a son named Forseti. Balder was protected from everything living or otherwise because his mother Frigga asked everything to not harm him. Only the frail mistletoe was not asked to pledge an oath of not harming her son, and after Loki found this out he tricked Balder's brother Hodr into throwing what is said to have been a dart made of mistletoe at Balder killing him.
It is a shame and in a way a dishonor that Snorri had so little to say about Balder and his life, but had so much to say about his death, stay in Hel and his return to Asgard after Ragnarok. Balder should be honored for his ( shining ) life and not just his tragic death.
Although I have so very little in common with a God so perfect and true, I do have the utmost respect for this God and the purity of his actions and spirit.
All Hail the shining God !
All Hail Balder second son of Odin !
Along with Balder on the 9th of every month, ( and King Radbod in August ), I honor the first of the Gods, Búri. First of the Aesir, father of Bor, and of course grandfather of Odin, Búri was licked from a salt block by the proto - cow Audhumla, as we are told from the creation story. Búri is said to be, " fair in appearance, large and powerful."
His son Bor would have three children with the Jotun Bestla, Odin Vili and Ve. ( Hoenir, Lodur ). And since we are the children of Odin, then we are the grandchildren of Bor and the great grandchildren of Búri.
Our religion is very much about ancestry. We must never forget Búri, Bor, and Bestla, simply because they came before Odin and the creation of Asgard, and Midgard. I honor them with the same love, devotion, and care that I do all of the other Gods. I never met my great grandfather, but I still honor him as part of my family. So too should we all honor those who came before Great Odin !
