The Abduction Of Thrudr
Magni and Modi were tired ! They had walked from one end of Asgard to the other looking for their sister, and had found no trace of her. Towards the end of their search they decided to see Heimdall, and ask if he had any information about Thrudr. The guardian of the Bifrost Bridge greeted Thor's boys with a warm welcome. After hearing of their search, Heimdall pointed across the Rainbow Bridge, and told them : " Thrudr passed this way several days ago on her way to visit the world of Midgard. She was riding her horse Gullhofi, and as always seemed to be in a hurry . " The brothers thanked Heimdall for the information, and trudged home knowing that they had just wasted an entire day looking for their sister in the wrong place. Magni, ever quiet, just laughed, but Modi once again let his anger get the better of him, and cursed his sister with every step, for making everyone worry, and wasting their time.
As the brothers walked up the golden steps of their hall they saw a stone tablet leaning up against the ornate doors. Magni, whose stride was much longer, reached the tablet first, and picked up the stone. As he read the deeply carved message his face turned to a deep frown. Seeing this, Modi asked : " What is it brother ? What is wrong ! ? " Magni in a rare show of anger crushed the tablet, showering his brother with the broken pieces. " The Jotuns have kidnapped our sister, and they are asking for a huge ransom for her safe return ! " Magni told his brother through gritted teeth. " We must tell mother, and call father home ! " Modi said angrily. " No brother ! I want to go after these Jotuns myself ! " Magni replied with more anger. " I will make them pay for what they have done ! " Magni said to no one in particular as he opened the door. " You will take me with you, won' t you Magni ? " Modi asked . " Yes, of course brother ! Together we will make these Jotuns regret the very day they were born ! " Magni told him as he put his hand on his older brother's shoulder. " What will we tell mother ? " Modi asked. " The truth. Or at least half of it ! Heimdall said that Thrudr went to Midgard on Gullhofi, and that is what we will tell mother. " he told his brother. " Then we will leave at first light to rescue our sister ? " Modi asked. " Yes ! And we will kill anyone, or anything, that gets in our way ! " Magni replied.
Sif had the servants pack her sons more than enough food for their journey to Midgard. She was glad that her stepsons were willing to travel to the realm of the humans to bring back her disobedient little daughter who had caused her to worry so. Sif had decided not to summon Thor over such a minor thing as their daughter staying away so long, but she would consult with her husband over Thrudr's punishment once he returned. Sif marveled at how much Magni and Modi were like their father. Especially Magni who even at his young age had Thor's humor, and of course his immense strength. Like their father, the boys did not like to ride on horseback, but preferred instead to walk on their travels. " When you find your sister make sure you tell her how angry I am with her ! " Sif told them as they left Bilskirnir. Modi smiled back at his stepmother. " I promise you mother, we fully intend to show our anger on this journey ! " Magni elbowed his little brother for the comment, but smiled none the less.
On their way out of Asgard they were stopped at the gates of Asgard by Heimdall. " What is your destination, sons of Thor ? " the guardian of Asgard asked. Modi as always stepped forward and spoke first : " We are going to Midgard to find our sister and bring her home. " he told the sentinel. Heimdall stepped to the side, and let them pass with a smile. As he watched Thor's sons walk slowly down the rainbow bridge he saw, with his great vision, two ravens flying high overhead. " You are not a very good liar Modi ! Odin would not send his ravens to watch over you if there was no danger " Heimdall said under his breath.
Magni and Modi soon reached Midgard, and carefully stayed in the deep woods so as not to be seen. Odin and Thor had both decreed that no one was allowed to interfere in the world of humans. Anyone not adhering to this order would be severely punished . Like their sister, the brothers did not understand their father's , or grandfather's, fascination with these puny human beings. They were frail, greedy, selfish, and extremely childish. There only redeeming quality in Modi's eyes was that for the most part they were war - like. Magni liked them a little because they made him laugh with their antics.
As they passed the border, and entered Jotunheim, the brothers saw a very strange body of water just below the towering mountains beyond. This great lake was odd in that it was frozen on the Jotun's side, but was not iced up on the Midgard side. Where the gentle liquid waves met the ice in the middle there was a misty fog which stretched from one side of the lake to the other. As the brothers stood mesmerized by such an odd sight Modi noticed off in the distance a mound that rose up on the landscape where neither grass nor trees grew. Modi suddenly felt compelled to investigate, and began to walk away from his younger brother. " Where are you going Modi ? " Magni asked. " I want to see what that dead patch of ground is over there. " Modi answered pointing to the spot of which he was speaking . Wary, but curious, Magni followed his older brother.
