The Abduction Of Thrudr
The Ghost And The Ferryman
" Now leave me or I will cause you boys harm ! " she yelled at the brothers. Magni bowed his head. " We bid you farewell then witch. " he told her. Modi stepped forward, and placed his foot upon the witch's mound. " No ! If you are a witch then you know where our sister is, and who the Jotun is who is holding her against her will. " Modi told her. " You WILL tell us witch ! " he added angrily. " How dare you threaten me ! " the witch shot back. Modi, as he often did, went into a rage ! " You moldy bitch ! If you do not tell us what we want to know I will dig up your worthless bones, and scatter them throughout the nine worlds, and you will disappear forever ! " he screamed back at her. " You would not do such a horrible thing ! " she shouted back . The witch looked over at Magni for help. Magni looked at her, and smiled. " Trust me witch, my older brother has quite the temper. " he told her. The ghostly figure calmed down, and sat on the edge of her mound. " I will answer one question, but then you must leave me in peace after I have told you what it is you wish to know. " she told them.
Modi began to speak, but Magni placed his hand on his brother's shoulder to stop him. " I think it would be better if I ask the question Modi. " he explained to his brother calmly. Modi took a deep breath and relented. " Perhaps you are right brother. " Modi replied. " Witch, our sister is Thrudr, daughter of Thor and Sif, and she was abducted by a Jotun, and is being held for ransom. " Magni told her. " Do you know who abducted our sister, and where they can be found ? " Magni asked calmly. " That is two questions my friend ! " she answered. She thought for a moment as Magni restrained his brother, who had drawn his sword again, and then asked a question of her own. " Will you kill Jotuns to get your sister back ? " Modi pointed his sword at the witch : " As many as is necessary ! " he yelled at her. " In that case I will answer ALL of your questions ! " she told them, as she motioned for them to sit with her.
" Your sister, the daughter of Mighty Thor, was taken captive by a Jotun named Hrungnir. He is an especially nasty Giant who wields a huge hone weapon. Your sister is being held in Hrungnir's great hall, and in my mind, as we speak, I see her struggling to free herself from the ropes that bind her. You will find this great hall past a narrow body of water. Once you have crossed this shallow lake you must then climb up a great mountain, and then walk into a long valley. At the end of this valley you will find nestled in between two large mountains Hrungnir's great hall. " she told them all in one breath.
The witch rose up, and floated to the middle of the great mound. " I have told you all that I know. Now please leave me in peace. " she told the brothers. Magni nodded. " Thank you for your help ancient one. " he told her. As they were leaving Modi turned around and asked : " What is your name witch ? " As she slowly sank back into the damp ground she moaned : " It has been so long that sadly I can no longer remember my name ! " And then she was gone.
The brothers traveled through the night, and by morning they reached the body of water that the witch had told them about. It was hard to tell if what lay before them was a lake, or a slow moving river, but they knew it was too deep to cross. As they looked across the water they saw a ferryman on the other side who appeared to be resting on a pier. " Old man ! Hey, Old man ! Wake up and ferry us across this water ! We have important business to attend to on the other side ! " Modi yelled rudely at the ferryman. The man rose slowly and peered across at the boys. The brothers were surprised by the appearance of the ferryman. He was old, and had a grey beard. He had one eye patched, and he was slightly hunched over as he looked over at them. He looked anything but fit for the task of being a ferryman ! " Old man ? Is that the way you ask a stranger for help?! " the ferryman asked. " We have no time for such nonsense old man ! Now ferry us across without delay !! " Modi shouted back. " This "old man " has more wisdom in the whiskers on his chin than you will ever have my son. I will not ferry across someone as disrespectful as you ! There are some shallows a few days travel north where you can wade across in the shallows. " he told Modi, and then sat back down. " What is your name old man, so that I can tell your kin how you died this day ! ? " Modi said in a furious tone. " My name is Harbard, and the only way you can strike me down, you brat of a boy, is to cross, and that is not going to happen this day ! " the ferryman yelled back sarcastically.
Just as Modi was going to exchange another insult Magni placed his hand firmly on his brother's shoulder. " Modi, brother, this is getting us no where ! Let me speak to the ferryman. " he told his angry brother. " He is all yours Magni ! " Modi shouted back at his brother. " Harbard ! My name is Magni, and I am the son of Thor and Jarnsaxa. I apologize for my brothers rudeness. " Magni told Harbard, while ignoring his older brother's angry looks. " It is very important that we travel through Jotunheim as quickly as possible. It is a matter of life and death ferryman ! Will you please ferry us across ? " Magni yelled across respectfully. " A deed of respect deserves a respectful deed in return. Yes ! I believe I will ferry you across boys ! " the ferryman told them.
As Harbard pulled up to the shore Magni hopped onto the ferry first. Modi followed quickly behind, and stood before the ferryman with his hand on the hilt of his sword. Seeing this Magni quickly placed his hand over Modi' s hand, and locked it in place on top of the hilt. Magni gave his older brother a stern look, and Modi nodded, and released his grip on his sword. " Your brother has yet to learn how to control his temper. " the ferryman told Magni. " And I am afraid Harbard that my brother never will ! " Magni said with a laugh. Modi gave them both a cold stare, and walked to the front of the ferry. The " old man " was surprisingly strong, and the journey across the water did not take nearly as long as the brothers had feared. As they jumped onto the shore Modi gave Harbard one last glare before walking away. The ferryman just smiled, and said under his breath : " Go quickly, and rescue my granddaughter ! " As the brothers slowly walked into the heart of Jotunheim two ravens landed on the ferryman's shoulders. " Go Hugin and Munin ! Watch over my grandchildren, and bring me news of their journey ! " Harbard commanded them .
