The Abduction Of Thrudr
Magni lead as they carefully made their way towards the distant sounds of their sister's voice. Not knowing what dangers still lay ahead they were cautious at every turn, and took their time in locating their sister. When they came to the chamber where the voice was emanating from, Magni once again raised his hands, and knocked down the door. This time, however, he was careful not to hit it too hard. For Magni did not want his sister covered in flying splinters. " After you my brother. " Magni told his brother with a dramatic flair. Modi bowed : " Most kind of you brother ! " he replied with a smile. Modi' s smile vanished, however, when he saw his sister tied to the bed and helpless. The angry God pulled out one of his swords, and quickly cut each of the ropes that bound his sister to the bed frame. " Thank You Modi ! " Thrudr exclaimed as she stretched out her aching muscles. Magni helped his sister to untie the Jotun's difficult knots that were tightly wrapped around her wrists and ankles, before carrying her out of the hall. As they emerged into the sunlight two shadowy creatures took to flight, and headed towards Midgard.
Magni carefully laid his sister under a tree that was a stone's throw from the hall. " Wait here brother, and look after our sister. I have a message that I would like to leave the Jotun Hrungnir ! " Magni told Modi with a determined look on his face. As Magni walked around to the rear of the hall, Modi helped his sister to her feet. " I want Gullhofi brother ! " Thrudr told her brother. " Of course ! I will get your mount for you sister. " Modi told her. Modi walked to the stable, and lead Gullhofi to the front of the hall. Suddenly there was a large crash ! Gullhofi reared up from the noise that echoed throughout the entire valley, and Thrudr had to grab hold of his reins to calm him down so that he would not bolt away. " Stay here ! " Modi told his sister as he ran to the rear of the hall . As Modi rounded the corner of the back of the hall he drew his swords, and prepared for a fight ! But what he saw made him put his swords back in their scabbards, and laugh. Magni was pounding his fists against the walls of the great hall with tremendous force. Each strike went through the exterior wall, and exposed the interior of the great hall. Modi stood back to avoid the flying debris from the structure, and watched in amazement as his brother punched hole after hole in Hrungnir's immense hall. Modi thought to himself : " That is a one angry message he is sending to Hrungnir ! "
Thrudr was worried when Modi did not return right away. She did as she was told and waited where she was, but she mounted Gullhofi just in case she needed to get away. Suddenly, with a great crash, she saw the entire hall disappear right before her eyes! Then she saw something moving in the dust cloud that enveloped the whole area, and readied herself for flight. As the dust slowly settled she saw an imposing figure standing in the middle of what was once Hrungnir' s great hall. A short distance away Modi was rolling on the ground laughing hysterically. Covered from head to toe in dust and filth, Magni slowly emerged from the wreckage, and walked over to his mounted sister. " Now we can go home sister ! " he told her as he wiped the dirt off of his mouth.
Modi, who had finally composed himself, fell in behind his brother and sister as they began the long trek home. Along the way Thrudr told her brothers how she was abducted by the Jotun, and all that she had to endure. Modi was greatly angered and wanted to go back after Hrungnir, but Magni reminded his impulsive brother that it was their duty to make sure their sister made it home safely first. Modi reluctantly agreed, and contented himself with telling his sister the trials and tribulations that they had encountered on their rescue mission. Thrudr gasped every time she heard how they were attacked by Jotuns, wolf creatures, and even great boulders that tried to kill them. When Modi finished his highly embellished tale, Thrudr dismounted and gave both of her brothers a hug, and a kiss on the cheek.
Harbard was waiting for them when they arrived at the ferry this time. He met them with a polite smile as he escorted them onto his boat. Once again Hugin and Munin watched from a tall tree as the ferry slowly made its way across the shallow body of water. As they reached the other side Magni and Modi both thanked Harbard, and shook his hand before they stepped onto the shore. Thrudr, however, hung back for a moment. " I hope that you enjoy the rest of your journey. " Harbard told the girl politely. " I will grandfather...... and thank you ! " she replied kissing his cheek. Odin laughed as she led Gullhofi off of the ferry. Thrudr was the only one who had always been able to see through his disguises. As the three youngsters walked away Odin motioned to his ravens. " Watch over them my friends ! " he told them. The ravens obeyed at once and took to flight after his grandchildren.
As Thor's children approached the Midgard border, Thrudr noticed that Modi began to walk away from them. " Magni, where is Modi going ? " she asked. Magni and Thrudr stopped and watched as their brother quickly walked towards the witch's mound. The closer his brother came to the mound the more concerned Magni became ! " She helped us ! Why would Modi want to hurt the witch ? " he asked himself. Just as Modi reached the grave mound Magni ran after his brother. The witch appeared as soon as Modi stepped on her sacred ground, and she hovered above her cursed grave with a questioning look on her face. Fearing that Modi was going to disturb the mound to destroy her he yelled : " Modi ! No ! " But instead of destroying the mound Modi walked a few steps further, and grabbed hold of the rune stone that held the inscribed curse. Modi struggled to move the stone, but he could not budge it. Magni, who now understood what his brother was doing, came up behind his brother and placed his arm on his brother's shoulder. " Let me help you brother ! " Magni told him. Thrudr watched as her brothers slowly rocked the stone until it came loose. Magni and Modi then pulled it out of the ground and threw it as far as they could away from the mound. The rune stone landed hard on a boulder and shattered into a thousand pieces. Suddenly, there was a loud boom, and a flash of bright light, from behind them on the mound. When the brothers turned around the witch was gone. Slowly a light appeared out of the mound, and grew in intensity until the brothers could no longer gaze upon it. After a few moments there was a brighter flash, and only the sunlight of the day remained . It took a few moments for the brothers to regain their sight, but when they did they were amazed at what they saw ! Standing in the middle of the mound was a beautiful young maiden, with hair of gold, and ruby red lips. She slowly walked over to the brothers, and kissed them each for helping her. Then she smiled, a very happy smile. " I remember ! I remember ! My name is Hrindi ! I am Hrindi ! " she shouted to everyone, and anyone. Thank you both for everything ! I will never forget your wonderful act of kindness ! " she told them. " Where will you go Hrindi ? " Modi asked her as she turned to leave. " I am going to search for my son Utgard - Loki ! " she told them as she walked away. Then she turned back towards the mound as if she had forgotten something. She raised one of her hands, and cupped it as if she were holding something in it. Then she threw the unseen object into the air. The brothers suddenly saw silver sparkles raining down on them. As each of these diamond like objects hit the ground grass and flowers began to grow on the mound. In a matter of moments the ugly barren grave mound became a beautiful little hill in the valley. Hrindi waved to the brothers, and to Thrudr, and began a journey of her own.
