.........Quietly, " floating in a tin can", ( David Bowie, Mr. Tom, A Space Oddity, 1969 ), were three astronauts, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders. They were, "floating", 200,000 miles away from our planet circling the Moon. The date was December 24, 1968, and these brave astronauts were about to see something never seen before in human history. What they saw was the Earth rise above the Moon's surface. Frank Borman grabbed one of the cameras on board and took a photograph of the " Earthrise", but not the famous one. He had used a black and white camera to take the shot. It was William A. Anders who took what at the time was considered the most spectacular photograph in history, a color photo of the Earth rising above the Moon's surface. Surprisingly the photograph that Anders took is not shown the way he took it. Generally it is shown with the Moon's surface on the bottom and the Earth directly above. Anders, because of the angle of the Apollo 8 spacecraft, took it vertically, with the Earth on the left and the Moon's surface on the right.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this historic picture. I was watching the CBS news and the newsman, I think it was Walter Cronkite, showed this incredible picture during the broadcast. The next morning it was in all the newspapers. I was awed by this incredible image ! In the foreground was the brownish grey surface of the Moon, devoid of all signs of life or structures. And there above it , posted in a black background, was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen, Great Mother Earth in all Her radiance ! This perfect sphere, with its beautiful blue patches peeking out from under wispy white clouds, was absolutely incredible ! No painter from any age could ever have captured this image as beautifully as Mr. Anders did. It was just perfect !
Even at the tender age of nine I knew that this was a very special moment. For I was able to see and appreciate, Mother Jord's true beauty. It also made me realize how small we all are in our vast universe. Though planet Earth, ( Mother Jord), was only 200,000 miles away it seemed so tiny and frail in the blackness of space. And on this tiny blue ball, I realized, were millions of people living their everyday lives. That's a lot for a nine year old child to mentally digest !
The first time ever I saw the face of the Goddess Jord, what a great moment. What a great memory ! What a great and beautiful Goddess Mother Jord is !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
