Eir is a Goddess who is said to be the " best of physicians " . Among the Aesir Goddesses Snorri Sturluson lists her third, but I give no validity to numbering or ranking the Gods and Goddesses. Although I gave Eir a role in one of my stories, ' All - Mother ', Eir plays no part at all in the Eddas which leads some to believe that she is not actually a Goddess, but simply the imagination of Snorri Sturlusson. I disagree with this theory and have always believed that Eir is one of the Aesir Goddesses. We simply have lost over time the stories that make up her life. The name Eir is listed twice more in the Eddas. In Fjolsvinnsmal Eir is listed as a maiden who serves the Giantess Menglod, and in the thurlur her name appears with the names of Valkyries. It does seem strange to me that when Thor is injured in the duel with Hrungnir, in Skaldskaparmal, he visits the seeress Groa instead of the " best of physicians ", Eir. Possibly Thor felt that Groa' s magic was more powerful than Eir' s healing power, but that is only speculation on my part.
Fulla is the name of the Goddess who is sometimes called one of Frigga' s handmaidens. This is a term that I absolutely dislike. To me the term " handmaiden " belittles the roles of these Goddesses and makes them a servant to a higher God or Goddess. I totally reject concepts like this, and believe that all the Gods and Goddesses have seperate and important roles both to us and in their native world of Asgard. The only term that I hate more is " minor God or Goddess ". Fulla appears in the Second Merseburg Charm as Volla : " Then Friia sang charms, and Volla her sister. " This makes me wonder if Frigga's " handmaidens " might actually be her real sisters, and not just the servants that Snorri betrays them as. Of course there is no evidence for this, other than the Second Merseburg Charm, but the concept does intrigue me.
Fulla is thought very highly of by the Aesir, and is one of two Goddesses to recieve a gift from Nanna when she is confined in Niflheim after her sorrowful death. Nanna sends a ring to her, which is carried by Hermod. She is also important enough to be invited and seated at Aegir' s party that he throws in his great hall. In Grimnismal Frigga sends Fulla to Geirrod to get him to mistreat her husband Odin who was disguised :
" Frigg sent her waiting-maid Fulla to bid Geirröd be on his guard, lest the magician who was coming should do him harm, and also say that a token whereby he might be known was, that no dog, however fierce, would attack him."
Fulla is listed fifth by Snorri, is said to be a virgin who wears her hair down, and one who wears a special gold band around her head. Fulla also holds the complete confidence of Frigga, who confides in her often. I see Fulla as being playful and flirty, and I always see her with a wonderful smile upon her face. She may help her " sister " Frigga, but in my opinion she does not serve her.
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja' s love, and Thor's protection !
