Vagn and his young band of marauders sailed along the entire coast of Denmark raiding the countryside for weapons and provisions for their Viking raids. After his men had plenty of weapons and foodstuffs he sailed to Jomsborg. When his ships were stopped before the great arch to declare who he was and what his intentions were he told the great Jomsviking leader Palnatoki that he was Vagn, the son of Aki, and that he and his men wanted to join the Jomsvikings. Palnatoki deferred his decision to Bui, who had previously joined the Jomsborg warriors, and was told by Bui that Vagn was too hard to handle and should not be let in the fortress. Others also agreed with Bui's recommendation. When Palnatoki asked Vagn his age he was angered to hear that he was only twelve winters old. He shot back at Vagn that the Jomsvikings laws required all members to be at least 18 years of age. Palnatoki offered to give his kinsman some of his possessions in Wales instead, but Vagn refused.
In a fit of rage and extreme arrogance Vagn challenged the son of Strut - Harold, whose name was Sigvaldi, to come out of the fort with an equal amount of ships and men, and fight him so he could prove that his ships, and his men, were the equal to anyone in the Jomsvikings ranks. He shouted back " If Sigvaldi flees I am to be admitted, if I flee I will leave and bother you no more. Palnatoki was amused by the arrogance of this young boy who was his kinsmen and sent Sigvaldi out with an equal amount of forces to confront Vagn. Palnatoki and his men watched from the fort with much anticipation as the gates were opened and the two forces grew closer and closer together.
Vagn fought Sigvaldi in a raging battle that began at sea, but later shifted to land. Palnatoki could sense which way the battle was trending and sent a messenger to Sigvaldi to end the fighting. Sigvaldi's forces had been soundly beaten by Vagn and his band of young warriors. Vagn though younger than the laws of the Jomsvikings allowed, had in Palnatoki's eyes earned his way into the stronghold and deserved a place next to his brother Jomsvikings. Vagn and his warriors became a valuable asset to the Jomsvikings and went out on every viking raid thereafter, and no one was his equal in battle !
