Loki, brash as always, was the first to speak up. He bragged that he could eat more than anyone there, and could do it in much less time. Utgard - Loki laughed, and called forth a challenger for Loki, whose name was Logi. To make a long story short, Loki ate very fast, and finished all the meat that was placed in the trencher, but his opponent, Logi, ate the meat, the bones, and even half of the trencher that they were plated on. Utgard - Loki, with a smirk on his face, declared Logi the winner.
Ignoring Thor completely, Utgard - Loki, then asked the youngster Thjalfi what he could do that was better than anyone else. Thjalfi, who was known to run faster than any man, replied that he would race against anyone in the stronghold and defeat them. Utgard - Loki called forth a man named Hugi, and everyone then proceeded out to the courtyard where there was a level bit of ground to hold the race upon. Thjalfi was proud to be able to show the Jotuns, and of course Thor himself, that he was a special person with mighty attributes.
The race, however, did not go as Thjalfi had planned, and Hugi finished so far ahead of him that Hugi turned back and met him halfway to the finish. Utgard - Loki laughed, a mocking laugh, and sarcastically told Thjalfi that he would have to exert himself a bit more if he intended to win the second race. Thjalfi gave his all in the second race, and did do better, but still wound up a long cross - bow length behind at the end. Utgard - Loki then commented that Thjalfi was indeed a fast runner, but added that he did not believe that Thjalfi had a chance in the third and final race either. The third race ended badly as well for Thjalfi even though he ran faster than he had ever run before. Hugi finished the race while poor Thjalfi was only halfway to the end.
Thor was then pitted in a drinking contest, a lifting contest, and a wrestling contest, each of which he lost badly. By this time it had become late, however, and Utgard - Loki decided to let Thor and his companions sit on his benches, even though they had not proved their worth to him. They were allowed to spend the night as well also as a show of Utgard - Loki's generous hospitality.
When dawn broke Thor, Loki, and Thjalfi, were invited to eat breakfast before they left. It is said that there was much good cheer at the tables that morning. Afterwards Utgard - Loki escorted them out of his stronghold, and told them to never come back. He also told them the truth about the contests, and how afraid they were at the skills of the three travelers. Thor had been unable to drink all the liquid in the horn because it was attached to the great ocean itself. Thor could not lift the cat because it was actually the great Midgard serpent that encircles the world, and he could not defeat the old woman in the wrestling match because she was old age itself, and no one can defeat old age.
Loki as well had been defeated with trickery, which is a great irony to have happened to the great God of trickery himself. He was pitted against Logi, who was the embodiment of wild fire itself. Logi had simply burned his way through the meat, bones and trencher. Nothing is more all - consuming than fire ! Thjalfi, had run very fast, but Utgard - Loki had used magic in the race with Thjalfi. Hugin was actually Utgard - Loki's thought, and poor Thjalfi had no chance to outrace the thoughts of Utgard - Loki !
The three companions were furious at being tricked so by this great magician, but Thor was outraged most of all and raised his mighty hammer to kill the Jotun - magician. Just as he was ready to deal the death blow, Utgard - Loki disappeared, as did his enormous stronghold. The three travelers continued on their way, but their were harsh words spoken about the dishonorable deception that had been used to trick them !
