After supper Thor slept well at the farm that night, and awoke just before daybreak and got dressed. Thor went over to the goat skins, raised his hammer Mjollnir and consecrated the goat skins and bones. The goats then stood up as before. The chariot God noticed, however, that all was not quite right. One of his goats was lame in the hind leg. Thor glared at the farmer and shouted that someone had done him an injustice, and that the farmer and his family were responsible for his now lame goat. The farmer was terrified when Thor' s eyebrows sank down over his now red glowing eyes. The farmer thought for sure that he and his family would all be killed when Thor gripped the handle of his hammer so hard that his knuckles went white. The farmer and his entire household begged and pleaded for mercy. The farmer even went so far as to offer Thor everything he owned. When Thor saw their terror his anger faded and when he had calmed down enough to speak he asked only for his children Thjalfi and Roskva as compensation. Though they would start as Thor's bondservants, they would eventually be seen as loyal and faithful companions.
Thor left his chariot and goats behind with the farmer and set off on a journey to the east to the land of the Jotuns. When they reached the sea they traveled by ship over the deep ocean, eventually reaching the shore of Jotunheim. With him Thor had not only Thjalfi and Roskva, but Loki also traveled with them. They had not walked far from the beach before they came upon a great forest. They walked the whole day through the dense woods until it became dark. Thjalfi, who could run faster than anyone else was carrying their food in a knapsack, but they were not very well off for food.
In the dark of the thick forest they sought out a place to stay for the night. They came across a very large hall with an opening that spanned the whole width of the hall, but had no door. Her they bedded down for the night. At midnight there was a great earthquake, and the ground shook violently beneath them. Thor stood, called to his companions, and they made a thorough search of the hall and soon discovered another room off to the right. Thor sat in the doorway as a guard while the others went inside. Thor gripped his hammer to defend himself when suddenly they heard a muffled roar. They waited until dawn and then Thor went outside and saw a man laying a short distance from their hall. The man was a large man even by Jotun standards, and he was asleep and snoring loudly. Thor now understood the strange noises and the shaking of the ground the night before.
Thor put on his belt of strength and his divine power doubled, but before Thor could strike the Jotun woke up and jumped to his feet !
