Once inside they could see a huge hall, and as they walked up to it they could see that the door was open. Inside there was a large number of men, and most of them were very large. As they walked into the great hall, they came before the King of Utgard known simply as Utgard - Loki. Thor and his companions greeted the king, but the king ignored them for some time before acknowledging them. When he did notice them he smiled contemptuously at them and said : " News travels slowly from the distant lands, or am I mistaken that this little urchin is Thor the Charioteer ? " Without waiting for an answer Utgard - Loki continued : " You must be stronger than you look to me. At what do you and your companions excel at ? For we do not allow just anyone to stay with us who is not a past master of some craft or accomplishment. "
From behind Thor a brash voice spoke up : " I have an accomplishment which I am ready to try ! " There is no one here in this hall who can eat as fast as I can ! " said Loki with a smirk of confidence on his face. Utgard - Loki looked skeptical as he replied to Loki. " That would be quite a feat if you can perform it. Let us put it to the test ! " The king called over to him a large fellow who sat at the very end of the bench whose name was Logi . Utgard - Loki asked Logi to stand before those in the hall and pit himself against Loki in an eating contest. Then several men brought a trencher into the hall and filled it with meat. Loki sat at one end of the trencher and Logi sat at the opposite end. When the king gave the signal both of them ate as fast as they could.
The two voracious eaters met in the middle of the trencher, and Loki was confident that he had won the competition because all that was left on his side of the trencher were bare bones with no meat left on them at all. When Loki looked smugly over at his opponents side of the trencher he was stunned to see that not only had Logi eaten all the meat, but also the bones, and even the trencher as well ! Everyone in the great hall agreed that Logi had one the eating contest . King Utgard - Loki then pronounced Logi the clear winner .
Then with a chuckle Utgard - Loki asked what the youngster Thjalfi could do to prove himself worthy to sit on the benches in his great hall. Thjalfi proudly stepped forward and said that he would run a race against anyone in Utgard and beat them to the finish line. The king agreed that if he could do it, that it would be a wonderful accomplishment and that he would award him a place on his benches. Utgard - Loki stood up out of his high - seat and walked outside the hall, through the gate, which he opened with ease, and into the flat plain beyond. Everyone in the hall followed the king to this spot, and waited for him to speak. Utgard - Loki called a young lad named Hugi to come over to him. The king told Hugi to run a race with Thjalfi along the track that he then showed both men.
When they ran the first race Hugi was so far ahead that at one point he turned back to face Thjalfi at the finish line. Then Utgard - Loki turned to Thjalfi and said : " It is true that no man has come here and been quicker on their feet, but you will have to exert yourself a bit more lad if you are to win this contest ." Then they ran the second race and this time when Hugi crossed the finish line and turned around Thjalfi was a long cross - bow shot behind. Utgard - Loki laughed as he commented : " Thjalfi is a good runner but I do not believe he will be our champion in this contest. However, we will run a third race to prove it once and for all. " When they ran the thirs race Hugi crossed the finish line and turned around he could barely see Thjalfi who was only at the halfway point of the track. Everyone agreed with the king that the contest had been put to the test, and that Hugi was undeniably the winner. They all laughed and joked about the newcomers as they went and sat back down inside the great hall.
