I do have some first hand experience on what they do normally eat over in Iceland because I was there in 2009. I try to match their foods as much as I can for this feast to give it a more authentic feel. Herring is huge in Iceland and I tried several varieties when I was there. Pickled herring is my favorite ! To this I add salmon, goat meat, ( to honor Thor's goats ), and lamb. I also like to put out goat cheese, and even though it is not Icelandic, lingonberries. Breads and pastries were always abundant at meals when I was there, and round out the food groups quite well ! Salads in Iceland are either sparse or non - existence, so I too ignore it for this event.
Now you know that you have to have liquid refreshments as well?! For my table I like to pour copious amounts of mead, akavit ,( big overseas ), and for after dinner, of course, a peppermint or peach schnapps. For non - drinkers strong coffee is the drink of choice in Iceland.
The ritual, as I perform it, consists of calling upon Thor to use his strength and mighty hammer, Mjolinir, to beat back the winter storms whipped up by the Etin Frost - Giants, and bring us milder weather and hopefully an earlier start to the spring. Once again, write your own rite and speak to the Gods using your words, not someone elses words. The calling upon Thor to fight the Frost - Giants is not really an imposition. Thor was born and bred for this task . It is His duty and his love ! The Eddas are filled with stories of Thor dueling and killing mis - behaving giants.
Some choose to honor, and ask for the blessing of Thorri, who gives his name to the first Norse month, a cold and wintry etin, for relief from the cold, dark, and bleak months of winter. But I am not one of them ! I cannot, and will not, honor etins, also known as giants or jotuns. I could never honor those who the Triad is in constant strife with. To honor them would be to dishonor those who have given me so much !
Anytime that I can honor Mighty Thor is a special day for me. Add to this good food and a bit of the, "hair of the dog" ,(alcohol), and it adds up to a fun night . And if nothing else, at least for this one day I can forget about the bleak cold weather outside and just honor the Gods, eat too much, and curl up to a warm fire with a glass of peach schnapps. It sounds great ! I can't wait for tomorrow !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
